Read Genesis Chapter 33

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Jacob looked up, and there was Esau coming, and four hundred men with him. So Jacob divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two servant women.

He put the servant women and their children in front, Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.

He himself went on ahead of them. He bowed to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

Esau ran to meet him. He put his arms around him, threw himself on his neck, and kissed him. And they wept.

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and the children. He said, "Who are these with you?" Jacob said, "They are the children God has graciously given your servant."

Then the servant women came near with their children, and they bowed down.

Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. After that Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

Esau said, "What did you mean by all that herd I met?" Jacob said, "They are to find grace in the sight of my lord."

But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself."

Jacob said, "No, please. If I have found grace in your sight, then take my gift from my hand. For I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me."

"Please take the gift I have brought you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." So Jacob urged him, and Esau took it.

Then Esau said, "Let us set out on our journey and go, and I will go ahead of you."

But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are young, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young. If they are driven hard for one day, all the flock will die."

"Please let my lord go on ahead of his servant. I will lead on slowly, at the pace the animals in front of me and the children can bear, until I come to my lord in Seir."

Esau said, "Let me leave some of the men who are with me to go with you." Jacob said, "Why do that? Let me only find grace in the sight of my lord."

So that day Esau went back on his way to Seir.

Jacob travelled to Succoth. He built himself a house, and made shelters for his cattle. That is why the place is called Succoth.

Jacob came safely to Shalem, a city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram. He set up his tent in front of the city.

He bought the piece of ground where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.

There he set up an altar, and he called it Elelohe-Israel.
