Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood. It was two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high.

2He covered it with pure gold, inside and outside, and he made a gold border around it.

3He cast four gold rings for it, to be set at its four corners: two rings on one side of it, and two rings on the other side.

4He made poles of shittim wood and covered them with gold.

5He put the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, so the ark could be carried.

6He made the mercy seat of pure gold. It was two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide.

7He made two cherubim of gold. He hammered them out of one piece, at the two ends of the mercy seat.

8One cherub was on the end at this side, and the other cherub on the end at that side. He made the cherubim out of the mercy seat itself, at its two ends.

9The cherubim spread their wings upward, and covered the mercy seat with their wings. Their faces were turned toward each other, looking down toward the mercy seat.

10He made the table of shittim wood. It was two cubits long, a cubit wide, and a cubit and a half high.

11He covered it with pure gold, and made a gold border around it.

12He also made a rim around it, as wide as a hand, and made a gold border around the rim.

13He cast four gold rings for it, and put the rings on the four corners, at its four legs.

14The rings were close to the rim. They held the poles for carrying the table.

15He made the poles of shittim wood and covered them with gold, so the table could be carried.

16He made the things that were on the table out of pure gold: its dishes, its spoons, its bowls, and its jars for pouring.

17He made the lampstand of pure gold. He hammered the lampstand out: its base, its stem, its cups, its knobs, and its flowers were all one piece with it.

18Six branches came out from its sides: three branches of the lampstand out of one side, and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side.

19On one branch were three cups shaped like almond blossoms, with a knob and a flower; and on another branch three cups shaped like almond blossoms, with a knob and a flower. It was the same for all six branches coming out of the lampstand.

20On the lampstand itself were four cups shaped like almond blossoms, with its knobs and its flowers.

21There was a knob under the first two branches, a knob under the next two branches, and a knob under the next two branches, matching the six branches coming out of it.

22Their knobs and their branches were all one piece with it. The whole lampstand was one piece of pure gold, hammered out.

23He made its seven lamps, its snuffers, and its snuffdishes of pure gold.

24He made the lampstand and all its vessels out of a talent of pure gold.

25He made the incense altar of shittim wood. It was a cubit long and a cubit wide, a square, and two cubits high. Its horns were one piece with it.

26He covered it with pure gold: its top, its sides all around, and its horns. He also made a gold border around it.

27He made two gold rings for it under the border, at its two corners, on its two sides, to hold the poles for carrying it.

28He made the poles of shittim wood and covered them with gold.

29He made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, made as a perfume maker makes them.

Explanation

Exodus 37

In short

This chapter describes how Bezalel, the master craftsman, made the main furnishings for the tabernacle's interior: the ark, the table for bread, the lampstand, the incense altar, and the holy oils and incense. Every item is built exactly to the measurements and materials that God commanded, showing skilled work and careful obedience.

Context

This passage follows God's detailed instructions for the tabernacle's furnishings, given in the previous chapters. Bezalel was chosen by God to lead the construction work. He and his team are now actually building what was commanded, moving from plan to reality.

What the text says

Bezalel makes the ark (verses 1-5): a wooden box overlaid inside and out with gold, with rings and poles so it can be carried. He makes the mercy seat (verses 6-9): a solid gold lid for the ark, topped with two gold cherubim with wings spread over it, facing each other.

He makes the table (verses 10-16): wooden, overlaid with gold, with rings and poles for carrying, and gold dishes and bowls to go on it.

He makes the lampstand (verses 17-24): hammered from one lump of pure gold, with a central shaft, six branches extending outward, and decorative almond-shaped bowls on it. The whole thing weighs a talent of gold. He also makes seven lamps and gold snuffers.

He makes the incense altar (verses 25-28): a small wooden square overlaid with gold, with four horn-like projections at its corners and gold rings and poles for carrying.

Finally (verse 29), he prepares the holy anointing oil and the incense mixture for burning, made according to proper formulas.

Takeaways

  • Each item is made from the exact materials and dimensions God specified earlier, showing the builders followed instructions precisely.
  • The use of large amounts of pure gold throughout shows the importance and holiness of these objects that belonged inside God's dwelling place.
  • Bezalel's skill in working with gold and wood transformed raw materials into objects of both function and beauty.
