Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1So Bezaleel and Aholiab worked, and every skilled man in whom the LORD had put wisdom and understanding. They knew how to do every kind of work for the service of the sanctuary. They did everything just as the LORD had commanded.

2Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every skilled man in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom. He called everyone whose heart stirred him to come and do the work.

3They received from Moses all the offering that the people of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, so that they could make it. And the people still brought him free offerings every morning.

4So all the skilled men who were doing all the work of the sanctuary came, each one from the work he was doing.

5They said to Moses, "The people are bringing much more than enough for the work which the LORD commanded us to do."

6So Moses gave a command, and they had it announced through the camp: "Let no man or woman make anything more for the offering of the sanctuary." So the people were stopped from bringing more.

7For what they already had was enough to do all the work, and more than enough.

8Every skilled man among those who did the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twisted linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet. He made them with cherubims, skilfully worked in.

9Each curtain was twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide. All the curtains were the same size.

10He joined five of the curtains to one another, and he joined the other five curtains to one another.

11He made loops of blue along the edge of the end curtain of the first set. He did the same along the edge of the end curtain of the second set.

12He made fifty loops in the one curtain, and fifty loops in the edge of the curtain of the second set. The loops held one curtain to the other.

13He made fifty clasps of gold, and joined the curtains to one another with the clasps. So it became one tabernacle.

14He made curtains of goats' hair for the tent over the tabernacle. He made eleven curtains.

15Each curtain was thirty cubits long and four cubits wide. The eleven curtains were all the same size.

16He joined five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.

17He made fifty loops along the outer edge of the end curtain of the one set, and fifty loops along the edge of the curtain that joined the second set.

18He made fifty clasps of brass to join the tent together, so that it would be one.

19He made a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering of badgers' skins above that.

20He made upright boards of shittim wood for the tabernacle.

21Each board was ten cubits long and one cubit and a half wide.

22Each board had two tenons, set the same distance apart. He made all the boards of the tabernacle this way.

23He made the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side, facing south.

24He made forty silver sockets to go under the twenty boards: two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under the next board for its two tenons.

25For the other side of the tabernacle, toward the north, he made twenty boards,

26and their forty silver sockets: two sockets under one board, and two sockets under the next board.

27For the far side of the tabernacle, toward the west, he made six boards.

28He made two boards for the corners of the tabernacle at the two sides.

29They were joined at the bottom, and joined together at the top with one ring. He did this with both of them, at both corners.

30So there were eight boards, and their sockets were sixteen silver sockets, two sockets under every board.

31He made bars of shittim wood: five for the boards on one side of the tabernacle,

32five bars for the boards on the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards at the far side of the tabernacle, toward the west.

33He made the middle bar to pass through the boards from one end to the other.

34He covered the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold to hold the bars, and covered the bars with gold.

35He made a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen. He made it with cherubims, skilfully worked in.

36For it he made four pillars of shittim wood, and covered them with gold. Their hooks were of gold, and he cast four silver sockets for them.

37He made a curtain for the door of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, embroidered with a needle;

38and its five pillars with their hooks. He covered their tops and their bands with gold, but their five sockets were of brass.

Explanation

Exodus 36

In short

Exodus 36 describes the skilled workers building the tabernacle, God's tent sanctuary. It begins when the people give more materials than needed, so Moses has to stop them from bringing more. The rest of the chapter details how the workers construct each part according to God's earlier instructions.

Context

This chapter follows God's detailed blueprints for the tabernacle given to Moses in earlier chapters. The people of Israel have been asked to bring offerings of materials voluntarily. Now the actual construction begins with Bezaleel and Aholiab, craftsmen to whom God has given skill and understanding, plus other wise-hearted workers.

What the text says

Verses 1-2 name the lead workers and those whose hearts moved them to volunteer. In verses 3-7, the workers receive the offerings from the people, but the gifts keep coming "every morning" until they tell Moses the supply is more than enough. Moses then commands throughout the camp that no one should bring anything more, and the giving stops.

Verses 8-19 describe the main tent fabric: ten fine linen curtains with blue, purple and scarlet thread, decorated with cherubim designs. These are joined in two groups of five using blue loops and gold clasps. Over this tent, eleven curtains of goats' hair are made and fastened with brass clasps, then covered with rams' skins and badgers' skins.

Verses 20-30 cover the wooden frame: acacia wood boards standing upright, with silver sockets to hold them. There are twenty boards on the south side, twenty on the north, and six on the west, with two corner boards.

Verses 31-34 describe wooden bars overlaid with gold that hold the boards together, running through rings. Verses 35-38 complete the work with a veil of fine linen and colored thread, a doorway curtain, and pillars with gold overlays and silver or brass sockets.

Takeaways

  • The people's generous giving had to be stopped because they brought more than the work required.
  • Every piece of the tabernacle was made according to the specific instructions God had given, using the materials prescribed.
  • Skilled craftsmen with gifts from God and willing hearts carried out the detailed work of building the sanctuary.
