Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1In the third month after the children of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

2They had set out from Rephidim and had come to the desert of Sinai. They set up camp in the wilderness. There Israel camped in front of the mountain.

3Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him out of the mountain. He said, "This is what you must say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:"

4"You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You saw how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself."

5"So now, if you will truly obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you will be my own special treasure above all peoples. For all the earth is mine."

6"And you will be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words you must speak to the children of Israel."

7So Moses came and called for the elders of the people. He set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him.

8All the people answered together and said, "Everything the LORD has spoken we will do." And Moses brought the people's words back to the LORD.

9The LORD said to Moses, "Look, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may believe you for ever." And Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.

10The LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and make them holy today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothes,"

11"and be ready for the third day. For on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai, where all the people can see."

12"You must set limits for the people all around, and say, 'Be careful not to go up into the mountain, or even touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain must surely be put to death."

13"'No hand shall touch him. He must surely be stoned, or shot through. Whether it is an animal or a person, it must not live.' When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain."

14So Moses went down from the mountain to the people. He made the people holy, and they washed their clothes.

15He said to the people, "Be ready for the third day. Do not go near your wives."

16On the third day, in the morning, there were thunder and lightning, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of the trumpet was very loud. All the people in the camp trembled.

17Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

18Mount Sinai was completely covered in smoke, because the LORD came down on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently.

19The sound of the trumpet went on long, and grew louder and louder. Moses spoke, and God answered him with a voice.

20The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. The LORD called Moses up to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

21The LORD said to Moses, "Go down and warn the people. They must not push through to the LORD to look, or many of them will die."

22"Let the priests also, who come near to the LORD, make themselves holy, or the LORD will break out against them."

23Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai. For you warned us and said, 'Set limits around the mountain, and make it holy.'"

24The LORD said to him, "Go, get down, and then come up again, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people push through to come up to the LORD, or he will break out against them."

25So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

Explanation

Exodus 19

In short

God meets Israel at Mount Sinai and offers them a covenant: if they obey Him, they will become His treasured people and a kingdom of priests. The people accept unanimously, and God prepares to appear on the mountain in three days with a display of thunder, lightning, and fire that will shake the entire mount.

Context

This comes three months after Israel left Egypt. The people have traveled through the wilderness and arrived at the mountain of Sinai. God calls Moses to the top of the mountain and gives him a message to take to the people. Moses then relays God's words to the elders, convenes the whole assembly, and prepares them for God's descent.

What the text says

In verse 1 and 2, Israel arrives at Sinai in the third month after leaving Egypt. God calls Moses to deliver a message: verses 4 and 5 remind the people that God protected them from Egypt and brought them safely here, then God offers a conditional covenant. Verses 5 and 6 state the condition is obedience to His voice and keeping His covenant; the reward is becoming His "peculiar treasure," "a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation."

In verse 7, Moses presents God's words to the elders. Verse 8 shows all the people respond with unanimous acceptance. God then tells Moses in verses 10 and 11 that the people must consecrate themselves for two days, because on the third day God will come down in sight of all people on the mount. Verses 12 and 13 establish strict boundaries: anyone who touches the mountain will die. Verses 16 through 18 describe the arrival: thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, a loud trumpet, and the mountain smoking as God descends in fire. In verses 20 through 24, God calls Moses to the top, then sends him back down to warn the people and priests not to break through, lest they perish.

Takeaways

  • God's covenant requires obedience in exchange for the status of a holy nation set apart for His purposes.
  • The people's direct consent makes them willing participants, not forced subjects.
  • God's appearance is accompanied by overwhelming signs that create both awe and danger for those unprepared or untaught.
