Read Deuteronomy Chapter 11

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1So you must love the LORD your God. Always keep what he has given you to keep: his laws, his rules, and his commandments.

2Know today that I am not speaking to your children. They have not known and have not seen how the LORD your God disciplined you. They did not see his greatness, his mighty hand, and his outstretched arm.

3They did not see his miracles and the things he did inside Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land.

4They did not see what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots. He made the water of the Red Sea flow over them as they chased after you, and the LORD has kept them destroyed to this day.

5They did not see what he did for you in the desert, until you came to this place.

6They did not see what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, their tents, and everything they owned. This happened in front of all Israel.

7But your own eyes have seen all the great things the LORD did.

8So keep every commandment I give you today. Then you will be strong, and you will go in and take the land you are crossing over to take.

9Then you will live long in the land the LORD promised on oath to your fathers, to give to them and to their children after them, a land flowing with milk and honey.

10The land you are going in to take is not like the land of Egypt, which you came out of. There you planted your seed and watered it with your foot, like a vegetable garden.

11But the land you are crossing over to take is a land of hills and valleys. It drinks water from the rain of heaven.

12It is a land the LORD your God cares for. The eyes of the LORD your God are always on it, from the start of the year to the end of the year.

13If you listen carefully to my commandments that I give you today, and love the LORD your God, and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,

14then I will give rain for your land at the right time, the early rain and the late rain, so you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil.

15And I will send grass in your fields for your cattle, so you may eat and be full.

16Be careful. Do not let your heart be fooled, so that you turn away and serve other gods and worship them.

17If you do, the anger of the LORD will burn against you. He will shut up the sky so there is no rain, and the land will not give its fruit. Then you will quickly die and be gone from the good land the LORD is giving you.

18So store up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul. Tie them as a sign on your hand, and let them be like bands on your forehead between your eyes.

19Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house, when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.

20Write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates.

21Then your days and the days of your children will be many in the land the LORD promised on oath to your fathers to give them. They will be as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

22If you carefully keep all these commandments I give you, and do them, and love the LORD your God, and walk in all his ways, and hold on to him,

23then the LORD will drive out all these nations ahead of you. You will take the land of nations greater and stronger than you.

24Every place where the soles of your feet walk will be yours. Your borders will reach from the desert to Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates, to the farthest sea.

25No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God will put the fear and terror of you on every land where you walk, just as he said to you.

26Look, today I am setting before you a blessing and a curse.

27The blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I give you today.

28And the curse, if you will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn away from the way I command you today, and go after other gods you have not known.

29When the LORD your God has brought you into the land you are going in to take, you must set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

30Are they not on the other side of the Jordan, westward, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the plain opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh?

31You are about to cross the Jordan to go in and take the land the LORD your God is giving you. You will take it and live in it.

32Be careful to do all the laws and rules I set before you today.

Explanation

Deuteronomy 11

In short

Moses tells Israel that their love for God and obedience to his commands must flow from what they have witnessed of his power. The land they will enter depends on rainfall from heaven, which God will grant or withhold based on their faithfulness. He sets before them a choice between blessing for obedience and curse for turning to other gods.

Context

Moses is speaking to the Israelites at the edge of the promised land, before they cross the Jordan River. He has already recounted God's laws, and now he presses home why obedience matters. The people themselves have seen God's acts in Egypt and the wilderness; the next generation will not have those memories, so teaching them is crucial. The choice he lays out will have immediate and long-term consequences for life in the land.

What the text says

Verses 1-7 appeal to what the Israelites have witnessed: God's power against Egypt, the drowning of Pharaoh's army, and his acts in the wilderness, including what he did to Dathan and Abiram. Because of these great acts, they must love God and keep his commands (verse 1).

Verses 8-9 state that keeping the commandments will make them strong to possess the land and live long in it, the land promised to their ancestors.

Verses 10-12 contrast Egypt with the promised land. Egypt required human effort to water. The new land "drinketh water of the rain of heaven," and God watches over it constantly.

Verses 13-15 promise that if they obey and love God, he will send rain in its proper season so they can harvest grain, wine, and oil, and have grass for cattle.

Verses 16-17 warn against being deceived and serving other gods. If they do, God's wrath will shut up heaven and the land will yield no fruit.

Verses 18-20 instruct them to keep these words in heart and soul, teach them to children at all times, and write them on doorposts and gates.

Takeaways

  • God's past acts of power are the foundation for present and future obedience.
  • The promised land's fertility depends on both God's care and Israel's faithfulness, not on human effort alone.
  • Obedience and disobedience have concrete, visible consequences tied to the land itself.
