Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, came back from the Jordan. The Spirit led him into the wilderness.
For forty days he was tempted by the devil. In those days he ate nothing. When the days were over, he was hungry.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God."
The devil took him up to a high mountain. In a moment of time he showed him all the kingdoms of the world.
The devil said to him, "I will give you all this power, and the glory of these kingdoms. It has been handed over to me, and I give it to anyone I want."
"So if you will worship me, it shall all be yours."
Jesus answered him, "Get behind me, Satan. For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only."
Then he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on the highest point of the temple. He said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here."
For it is written, He will give his angels orders about you, to keep you safe.
"And in their hands they shall lift you up, so that you never strike your foot against a stone."
Jesus answered him, "It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God."
When the devil had finished every temptation, he left him for a time.
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. News about him spread through all the country around.
He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As he always did, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. When he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach freedom to the captives, and new sight to the blind, to set free those who are crushed,"
"to preach the year when the Lord will welcome his people."
He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
He began to say to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
They all spoke well of him. They were amazed at the gracious words that came out of his mouth. And they said, "Is this not Joseph's son?"
He said to them, "You will surely say this proverb to me, 'Doctor, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here also in your own town.'"
And he said, "I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own town."
But I tell you truly, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a great famine through all the land.
Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but only to Sarepta, a city of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
"And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. None of them was made clean, except Naaman the Syrian."
When they heard these things, everyone in the synagogue was filled with anger.
They got up and pushed him out of the city. They led him to the edge of the hill their city was built on, to throw him down headlong.
But he walked through the middle of them and went on his way.
They were astonished at his teaching, for his word had power.
In the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean devil. He cried out with a loud voice,
"Leave us alone. What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God."
Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet, and come out of him." The devil threw the man down in front of them all, then came out of him and did not hurt him.
They were all amazed. They said to one another, "What word is this? With authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out."
News about him went out to every place in the country around.
He got up and left the synagogue and went into Simon's house. Simon's wife's mother was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him to help her.
He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. At once she got up and served them.
When the sun was setting, all who had friends sick with different diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.
Devils also came out of many people, crying out and saying, "You are Christ the Son of God." But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was Christ.
When it was day, he left and went into a lonely place. The people looked for him. They came to him and tried to hold him back, so that he would not leave them.
But he said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, because that is why I was sent."
And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
