"You must not make idols for yourselves, or carved images. Do not set up a standing image, and do not place any carved stone in your land to bow down to it. For I am the LORD your God."
"You must keep my sabbaths, and honour my sanctuary. I am the LORD."
"If you live by my laws, and keep my commandments, and do them,"
then I will give you rain at the right time. The land will give its crops, and the trees of the field will give their fruit.
Your threshing will last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will last until it is time to sow. You will eat your bread until you are full, and live safely in your land.
I will give peace in the land. You will lie down, and no one will make you afraid. I will clear the dangerous animals out of the land, and the sword will not pass through your land.
You will chase your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword.
Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will put ten thousand to flight. Your enemies will fall before you by the sword.
I will look on you with favour, and make you fruitful, and give you many children, and I will keep my covenant with you.
You will still be eating the old harvest when you must clear it out to make room for the new.
I will set my tabernacle among you, and I will not turn away from you in disgust.
I will walk among you, and be your God, and you will be my people.
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, so that you should not be their slaves. I have broken the bars of your yoke, and made you walk upright.
"But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these commandments,"
and if you reject my laws, or if you hate my judgements, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant,
then this is what I will do to you. I will bring terror on you, and wasting disease, and burning fever, which will destroy your eyes and fill your heart with sorrow. You will sow your seed for nothing, for your enemies will eat it.
I will set my face against you, and you will be struck down by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will run away when no one is chasing you.
"And if after all this you still will not listen to me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins."
I will break the pride of your strength. I will make your sky like iron, and your ground like bronze.
Your strength will be spent for nothing, for your land will not give its crops, and the trees of the land will not give their fruit.
"And if you walk against me, and will not listen to me, I will bring seven times more plagues on you, as your sins deserve."
I will send wild animals among you. They will rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number. Your roads will be empty.
"And if these things do not correct you, but you still walk against me,"
then I also will walk against you, and I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
I will bring a sword upon you, to take revenge for the breaking of my covenant. When you gather together inside your cities, I will send plague among you, and you will be handed over to the enemy.
When I have cut off your supply of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will give your bread back to you by weight. You will eat, and not be satisfied.
"And if after all this you will not listen to me, but walk against me,"
then I will walk against you in fury. I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins.
You will eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters you will eat.
I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and throw your dead bodies on the dead bodies of your idols. I will turn away from you in disgust.
I will make your cities a ruin, and leave your holy places empty, and I will not smell the pleasing smell of your offerings.
I will make the land empty, and your enemies who live in it will be shocked at it.
I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out a sword after you. Your land will be empty, and your cities a ruin.
Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths, all the time it lies empty and you are in your enemies' land. Then the land will rest, and enjoy its sabbaths.
All the time it lies empty it will rest, because it did not rest in your sabbaths when you lived on it.
As for those of you who are left alive, I will make their hearts weak with fear in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a leaf blown by the wind will chase them. They will run as if running from a sword, and they will fall when no one is chasing them.
They will stumble over one another, as if fleeing from a sword, when no one is chasing them. You will have no power to stand before your enemies.
You will die among the nations, and the land of your enemies will eat you up.
Those of you who are left will waste away in their sin in your enemies' lands. They will waste away with them because of the sins of their fathers too.
"If they confess their sin, and the sin of their fathers, and the wrong they did against me, and that they also walked against me,"
so that I also walked against them, and brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their stubborn hearts are humbled, and they accept the punishment for their sin,
then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham I will remember. And I will remember the land.
The land will be left by them, and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies empty without them. And they will accept the punishment for their sin, because, yes, because they rejected my judgements, and because they hated my laws.
Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not throw them away, and I will not hate them so as to destroy them completely and break my covenant with them. For I am the LORD their God.
"But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt while the nations watched, so that I might be their God. I am the LORD."
These are the laws and judgements and teachings which the LORD made between himself and the children of Israel on Mount Sinai, through Moses.
