The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, who died when they offered before the LORD.
The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to Aaron your brother. Tell him that he must not come at just any time into the holy place inside the veil, in front of the mercy seat that is on the ark. If he does, he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat."
"This is how Aaron shall come into the holy place: with a young bull for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering."
"He shall put on the holy linen coat. He shall wear the linen trousers on his body. He shall tie a linen belt around him, and wear the linen turban on his head. These are holy clothes. So he shall wash his body in water, and then put them on."
"He shall take from the community of the children of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering."
"Aaron shall offer the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his household."
"He shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation."
"Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats. One lot shall be for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat."
"But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement with it. Then it shall be let go into the wilderness as the scapegoat."
"Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his household. He shall kill the bull of the sin offering which is for himself."
"He shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it inside the veil."
"He shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, so that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony. Then he will not die."
"He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat, on the east side. In front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times."
"Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil. He shall do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat, and in front of the mercy seat."
"So he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their wrongdoing in all their sins. He shall do the same for the tabernacle of the congregation, which stays among them in the middle of their uncleanness."
"No one shall be in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he comes out. He shall make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the community of Israel."
"Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around."
"He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times. So he shall cleanse it and make it holy from the uncleanness of the children of Israel."
"When he has finished making atonement for the holy place, the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat."
"Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the sins of the children of Israel, and all their wrongdoing in all their sins. He shall put them on the head of the goat, and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man chosen for the task."
"The goat shall carry all their sins on itself to a land where no one lives. And the man shall let the goat go in the wilderness."
"Then Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation. He shall take off the linen clothes which he put on when he went into the holy place, and leave them there."
"He shall wash his body with water in the holy place, and put on his own clothes. Then he shall come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people."
"He shall burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar."
"The man who let go the goat as the scapegoat shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water. After that he may come into the camp."
"The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried outside the camp. Their skins, their flesh, and their dung shall be burned in the fire."
"The man who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water. After that he may come into the camp."
"This shall be a law for you for ever: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble yourselves and do no work at all. This is for anyone born in your own country, and for the stranger who lives among you."
"For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, so that you may be clean from all your sins before the LORD."
"It shall be a sabbath of rest for you, and you shall humble yourselves. This is a law for ever."
"The priest who is anointed and set apart to serve as priest in his father's place shall make the atonement. He shall put on the linen clothes, the holy clothes."
"He shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary. He shall make atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation and for the altar. He shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the community."
