After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
A great crowd followed him, because they saw the miracles he did on those who were sick.
Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
The passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
Then Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming to him. He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread, so that these people may eat?"
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do.
Philip answered him, "Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not enough for them, even if each one takes only a little."
"There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fishes. But what are they among so many?"
Jesus said, "Make the men sit down." Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he gave them out to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to those who were sitting down. He did the same with the fishes, as much as they wanted.
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the pieces that are left over, so that nothing is lost."
So they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten.
Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, "This is truly that prophet who was to come into the world."
So when Jesus saw that they meant to come and take him by force to make him a king, he went away again into a mountain by himself alone.
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
and got into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
The sea rose up, because a great wind was blowing.
So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the ship, and they were afraid.
But he said to them, "It is I. Do not be afraid."
Then they gladly took him into the ship, and at once the ship was at the land where they were going.
The next day the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there had been no other boat there except that one which his disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not gone with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
(But other boats came from Tiberias, near to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.)
So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus.
When they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"
Jesus answered them and said, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you ate the loaves and were filled."
"Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give you. For God the Father has set his seal on him."
Then they said to him, "What shall we do, so that we may do the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God: that you believe on the one he has sent."
So they said to him, "What sign will you show us then, so that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?"
"Our fathers ate manna in the desert. As it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat."
Then Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, Moses did not give you that bread from heaven. It is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven."
"For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
Then they said to him, "Lord, give us this bread always."
And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes on me will never be thirsty."
"But I said to you that you have seen me, and yet you do not believe."
"All that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never drive away."
"For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me."
"And this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day."
"And this is the will of him who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes on him may have everlasting life. And I will raise him up at the last day."
Then the Jews complained about him, because he said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven."
They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, I came down from heaven?"
So Jesus answered and said to them, "Do not complain among yourselves."
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up at the last day."
"It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. So everyone who has heard and has learned from the Father comes to me."
"Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father."
"I tell you the truth, whoever believes on me has everlasting life."
"I am that bread of life."
"Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and they are dead."
"This is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat of it and not die."
"I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live for ever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."
So the Jews argued among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
Then Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you."
"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
"For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed."
"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him."
"As the living Father sent me, and I live by the Father, so whoever eats me will live by me."
"This is that bread which came down from heaven. It is not as your fathers ate manna, and are dead. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever."
He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
So many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying. Who can listen to it?"
Jesus knew within himself that his disciples were complaining about it, and he said to them, "Does this offend you?"
"What then if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before?"
"It is the spirit that gives life. The flesh is of no use. The words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life."
"But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray him.
And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is given to him by my Father."
From that time many of his disciples turned back, and no longer walked with him.
Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Will you also go away?"
Then Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."
"And we believe and are sure that you are that Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus answered them, "Have I not chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?"
He was speaking of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.
