God's apocalyptic judgment devastates the earth: it languishes, the heavens fade, and earth's inhabitants are guilty of transgressing laws and breaking the everlasting covenant. Few are left; the city of confusion is broken. Yet from earth's ends come songs glorifying the Righteous One. The LORD will punish heaven's host and earth's kings, then reign gloriously on Mount Zion.

View on MapMount Zion originally referred to the fortified hill that David captured from the Jebusites, making it the City of David. Over time, the name expanded to include the Temple Mount and came to represent Jerusalem as a whole, and ultimately the dwelling place of God. In Scripture, Zion symbolizes God's chosen city, His people, and the heavenly Jerusalem. The prophets spoke of Zion as the place from which salvation would come and where God would reign forever.
