Hebrews 3 - Simple English

Read Hebrews Chapter 3

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1So then, holy brothers and sisters, you share in a calling from heaven. Think carefully about Jesus Christ, the Apostle and High Priest of the faith we profess.

2He was faithful to the One who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house.

3This man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses. For the one who builds a house has more honour than the house itself.

4Every house is built by someone, but the one who built all things is God.

5Moses truly was faithful in all God's house, as a servant. He was a witness to the things that would be spoken later.

6But Christ is faithful as a son over his own house. We are his house, if we hold on firmly to the end, keeping our confidence and the hope we are glad of.

7So, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you will hear his voice,"

8"do not harden your hearts, as you did when you made me angry, on the day of testing in the wilderness."

9"There your fathers tested me and tried me, and saw my works for forty years."

10"So I was grieved with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.'"

11"So I swore in my anger, 'They shall not enter into my rest.'"

12Be careful, brothers and sisters, that none of you has an evil heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God.

13Instead, encourage one another every day, while it is still called "Today." Then none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14For we share in Christ, if we hold firmly to the end the confidence we had at the start.

15As it is said, "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as you did when you made me angry."

16For who were the ones who heard and then made him angry? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt with Moses?

17And with whom was he grieved for forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18And to whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest? Was it not to those who did not believe?

19So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Explanation

Hebrews 3

In short

The author argues that Jesus deserves more respect than Moses because Jesus is the builder of God's house while Moses served within it. The passage then warns readers not to repeat Israel's mistake in the desert, where hardened hearts and unbelief kept an entire generation from entering God's rest.

Context

This letter was written to Jewish Christians who knew the Hebrew scriptures well. The author has been showing that Jesus is superior to angels, and now turns to show he is also superior to Moses, the greatest figure in Jewish tradition. The warning in verses 7 onwards quotes Psalm 95, applying the ancient story of Israel's desert rebellion to the author's current readers, urging them not to lose faith.

What the text says

Verses 1-3 open with a comparison: just as a builder of a house deserves more honour than the house itself, Jesus deserves more glory than Moses. Verses 4-6 explain that God built everything, and while Moses was faithful as a servant in God's house, Christ rules as a son over his house, which the readers are part of if they keep their confidence firm to the end.

Verses 7-11 quote God's warning through the Holy Spirit: do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness during forty years of testing. God saw their works but grew grieved with that generation because they always went astray and did not know God's ways, so God swore they would not enter his rest. Verses 12-14 apply this warning directly: readers must not develop an unbelieving heart that turns away from God, but instead encourage each other daily, for they share in Christ only if they hold their confidence firm to the end.

Verses 16-19 clinch the point: not all who left Egypt sinned, but those who did not believe were the ones God grieved with for forty years, and those were the ones God swore would not enter his rest. Therefore they could not enter because of unbelief.

Takeaways

  • Jesus holds a higher position than Moses because he built God's house rather than serving within it.
  • Israel's failure to enter God's rest came from refusing to believe God, not from lack of opportunity.
  • Readers are warned to encourage each other daily so that none of them harden their hearts through unbelief.
