So let us be careful. The promise of entering his rest is still open. Do not let any of you seem to fall short of it.
For the good news was preached to us, just as it was to them. But the word they heard did them no good, because they did not mix it with faith when they heard it.
But we who have believed do enter into that rest. As he said, "As I have sworn in my anger, they shall not enter into my rest." Yet his works were finished from the foundation of the world.
For in one place he spoke about the seventh day like this: "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works."
And in this place again he says, "They shall not enter into my rest."
So it remains that some must enter that rest. The ones who first heard the good news did not enter, because they did not believe.
So again he sets a certain day, calling it "Today." Long afterward he said through David the words already quoted: "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."
For if Jesus had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
So a rest still remains for the people of God.
For whoever has entered into his rest has also stopped from his own works, as God did from his.
So let us work hard to enter that rest, so that no one falls by following the same example of unbelief.
For the word of God is living and powerful. It is sharper than any sword with two edges. It cuts deep enough to divide soul and spirit, and joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart.
No created thing is hidden from his sight. Everything is naked and laid open before the eyes of the one we must answer to.
So then, we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God. Let us hold firmly to what we say we believe.
For we do not have a high priest who cannot feel for us in our weaknesses. He was tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin.
So let us come with boldness to the throne of grace. There we will receive mercy, and find grace to help us when we need it.
