Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh. He said, "My father and my brothers have come out of the land of Canaan, with their flocks and their herds and all that they have. Look, they are in the land of Goshen."
He took some of his brothers, five men, and brought them before Pharaoh.
Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your work?" They said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers before us."
They said to Pharaoh as well, "We have come to stay for a time in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks. The famine is very bad in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen."
"The land of Egypt is before you. Settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in the land of Goshen. And if you know of any able men among them, put them in charge of my cattle."
Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my journeying are a hundred and thirty years. The years of my life have been few and hard. They have not reached the years my fathers lived in their journeying."
So Joseph settled his father and his brothers. He gave them land of their own in Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
And Joseph provided food for his father, and his brothers, and all his father's household, giving to each family what they needed.
There was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very bad. The land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan grew weak because of the famine.
Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in payment for the corn they bought. And Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.
When the money was gone in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us bread. Why should we die in front of you? For our money is gone."
Joseph said, "Bring your cattle, and I will give you food for your cattle, if your money is gone."
So they brought their cattle to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, for flocks, for herds of cattle and for donkeys. That year he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle.
When that year was ended, they came to him the second year and said to him, "We will not hide it from my lord: our money is all spent, and my lord has our herds of cattle. Nothing is left for my lord to see but our bodies and our lands."
"Why should we die before your eyes, we and our land as well? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be Pharaoh's servants. Give us seed, so that we may live and not die, and so that the land may not become waste."
So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. Every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was too hard for them. So the land became Pharaoh's.
And as for the people, he moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other.
Only the land of the priests he did not buy. The priests had a share given to them by Pharaoh, and they ate the share Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their lands.
Then Joseph said to the people, "Look, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land."
"When the harvest comes in, you shall give a fifth part to Pharaoh. Four parts shall be your own, for seed for the field, and for your food, and for those in your households, and for food for your little ones."
They said, "You have saved our lives. Let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants."
So Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt, and it stands to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part. Only the land of the priests was not Pharaoh's.
Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen. They gained property there, and grew, and became very many.
Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the whole age of Jacob was a hundred and forty-seven years.
The time drew near when Israel must die. He called his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have now found grace in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt."
"But I will lie with my fathers. You shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place." And he said, "I will do as you have said."
And he said, "Swear to me." And he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.
