OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read Exodus Chapter 22

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

"If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he must pay back five oxen for the ox, and four sheep for the sheep."

"If a thief is caught breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, no blood is to be shed for him."

"But if the sun has risen on him, blood must be shed for him. The thief must pay back in full. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft."

"If what he stole is found alive in his hand, whether it is an ox, or a donkey, or a sheep, he must pay back double."

"If a man lets his animals graze in a field or vineyard, and turns his animal loose so that it feeds in another man's field, he must pay back from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard."

"If a fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacks of grain, or standing grain, or a field is burned up, the one who started the fire must certainly pay back what was lost."

"If a man gives his neighbour money or goods to keep safe, and they are stolen out of the man's house, then if the thief is found, he must pay back double."

"If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges. They will see whether he has put his hand on his neighbour's goods."

"In every case of wrongdoing, whether about an ox, a donkey, a sheep, clothing, or any lost thing that another man claims is his, the case of them both shall come before the judges. The one the judges condemn must pay back double to his neighbour."

"If a man gives his neighbour a donkey, or an ox, or a sheep, or any animal to keep safe, and it dies, or is hurt, or is driven away, and no one sees it,"

then an oath before the LORD shall settle it between them both, that he has not put his hand on his neighbour's goods. The owner shall accept this, and the other man shall not pay anything.

"But if it was stolen from him, he must pay back the owner."

"If it was torn in pieces by a wild animal, let him bring it as proof, and he shall not pay for what was torn."

"If a man borrows anything from his neighbour, and it is hurt or dies while the owner is not with it, he must certainly pay for it."

But if the owner was with it, he shall not pay for it. If it was hired, the loss is covered by the hire money.

"If a man tempts a young woman who is not engaged to be married, and lies with her, he must pay the bride price and make her his wife."

If her father completely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay money equal to the bride price for virgins.

"You shall not allow a witch to live."

"Anyone who lies with an animal shall surely be put to death."

"Whoever sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD alone, shall be completely destroyed."

"You shall not trouble a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt."

"You shall not harm any widow or fatherless child."

If you harm them in any way, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.

My anger will burn hot, and I will kill you with the sword. Your wives will be widows, and your children fatherless.

"If you lend money to any of my people who is poor among you, you shall not act like a moneylender to him. You shall not charge him interest."

If you take your neighbour's coat as a pledge, you must give it back to him before the sun goes down.

For it is his only covering. It is the clothing for his body. What else will he sleep in? When he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am gracious.

"You shall not speak evil of the gods, or curse the ruler of your people."

"You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe fruits and of your wine. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me."

You shall do the same with your oxen and with your sheep. For seven days it shall stay with its mother. On the eighth day you shall give it to me.

"You shall be holy men to me. You shall not eat any meat that is torn by wild animals in the field. You shall throw it to the dogs."
