Exodus 21 - Simple English

OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read Exodus Chapter 21

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

"These are the laws you are to set before them."

"If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve for six years. In the seventh year he shall go free, and pay nothing."

If he came in alone, he shall go out alone. If he was married, then his wife shall go out with him.

If his master has given him a wife, and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall belong to her master, and he shall go out alone.

But if the servant says plainly, "I love my master, my wife, and my children. I will not go out free,"

then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the door post. His master shall bore through his ear with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever.

"If a man sells his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go free as the menservants do."

If she does not please her master, who has taken her for himself, then he shall let her be bought back. He has no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt falsely with her.

And if he has taken her for his son, he shall treat her in the way daughters are treated.

If he takes himself another wife, he shall not cut down her food, her clothing, or her rights as a wife.

And if he does not do these three things for her, then she shall go out free, without paying money.

"Whoever strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death."

But if he did not lie in wait for him, and God let him fall into his hand, then I will appoint you a place where he may flee.

But if a man comes upon his neighbour on purpose, to kill him by trickery, you shall take him away from my altar, so that he may die.

"Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death."

"Whoever steals a man and sells him, or if the man is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death."

"Whoever curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death."

"If men quarrel, and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist, and he does not die but stays in bed,"

then if he gets up again and walks about outside with his staff, the one who struck him shall go free. Only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall see that he is fully healed.

"If a man strikes his manservant or his maidservant with a rod, and the servant dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished."

But if the servant lives on for a day or two, he shall not be punished, for the servant is his money.

"If men fight, and hurt a pregnant woman so that her child comes out, and yet no further harm follows, he shall surely be fined, as the woman's husband demands of him. He shall pay as the judges decide."

And if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life,

eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

burning for burning, wound for wound, blow for blow.

"If a man strikes the eye of his manservant or the eye of his maidservant, and destroys it, he shall let the servant go free because of the eye."

And if he knocks out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth, he shall let the servant go free because of the tooth.

"If an ox gores a man or a woman so that they die, then the ox shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten. But the owner of the ox shall go free."

But if the ox has gored with its horn in the past, and its owner was warned, and he did not keep it in, and it has killed a man or a woman, then the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death.

If a sum of money is laid on him, then he shall give whatever is laid on him to ransom his life.

Whether the ox has gored a son or gored a daughter, it shall be done to him according to this law.

If the ox gores a manservant or a maidservant, the owner shall give thirty shekels of silver to their master, and the ox shall be stoned.

"If a man opens a pit, or digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,"

the owner of the pit shall make it good. He shall give money to the owner of the animals, and the dead animal shall be his.

"If one man's ox hurts another man's ox so that it dies, then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money from it. They shall also divide the dead ox."

Or if it is known that the ox has gored in the past, and its owner has not kept it in, he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead one shall be his own.
