God speaks the Ten Commandments directly to the assembled people, establishing the foundational covenant stipulations governing relationship with God and neighbor. The first four commandments concern exclusive worship of YHWH, prohibition of images, reverence for His name, and Sabbath observance. The remaining six govern honor of parents and prohibitions against murder, adultery, theft, false witness, and covetousness, as the terrified people ask Moses to mediate.
