Read Exodus Chapter 16

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

They set out from Elim, and the whole community of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which lies between Elim and Sinai. It was the fifteenth day of the second month after they left the land of Egypt.

And the whole community of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

The children of Israel said to them, "If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and ate bread until we were full. But you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Look, I will rain bread from heaven for you. The people will go out and gather a set amount every day. In this way I will test them, to see whether they will walk in my law or not."

"On the sixth day they will prepare what they bring in, and it will be twice as much as they gather on the other days."

So Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, "In the evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt."

"And in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your complaints against the LORD. What are we, that you complain against us?"

And Moses said, "The LORD will give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread until you are full, because the LORD has heard your complaints which you make against him. What are we? Your complaints are not against us, but against the LORD."

And Moses said to Aaron, "Say to all the community of the children of Israel, 'Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your complaints.'"

As Aaron spoke to the whole community of the children of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and look, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

"I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them and say, 'In the evening you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.'"

That evening the quails came up and covered the camp. And in the morning the dew lay all around the camp.

When the dew had gone, look, on the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as fine as frost on the ground.

When the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "It is manna," for they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat."

"This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Gather as much of it as each person can eat, an omer for each one, according to the number of people you have. Each of you take for those who are in his tent.'"

The children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

When they measured it with an omer, the one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little had no lack. Each one gathered as much as he could eat.

And Moses said, "Let no one leave any of it until the morning."

But they did not listen to Moses. Some of them left part of it until the morning, and it bred worms and smelled foul. And Moses was angry with them.

They gathered it every morning, each one as much as he could eat. And when the sun grew hot, it melted.

On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each person. And all the leaders of the community came and told Moses.

He said to them, "This is what the LORD has said: 'Tomorrow is a day of rest, the holy sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you want to bake today, and boil what you want to boil. Whatever is left over, put aside and keep it until the morning.'"

So they put it aside until the morning, as Moses told them, and it did not smell foul, and there were no worms in it.

And Moses said, "Eat that today, for today is a sabbath to the LORD. Today you will not find any in the field."

"Six days you will gather it, but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, there will be none."

Some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, and they found none.

And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?"

"See, the LORD has given you the sabbath. That is why he gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Let each of you stay where he is. Let no one go out of his place on the seventh day."

So the people rested on the seventh day.

The house of Israel called its name Manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

And Moses said, "This is what the LORD commands: 'Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'"

And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a pot, and put a full omer of manna in it, and set it before the LORD, to be kept for your generations."

As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron set it before the Testimony, to be kept.

The children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to a land where people lived. They ate manna until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan.

Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
