Read Ephesians Chapter 2

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1And he has made you alive. You were dead in your trespasses and sins.

2In the past you lived in them. You followed the way of this world, and the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the children of disobedience.

3We all lived among them once, and our conduct was ruled by the desires of our flesh. We did what the flesh and the mind wanted. By nature we were children of wrath, just like everyone else.

4But God is rich in mercy. Because of his great love for us,

5even when we were dead in sins, he made us alive together with Christ. (By grace you are saved.)

6And he raised us up together with him, and seated us together with him in heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

7so that in the ages to come he might show the enormous riches of his grace, in his kindness to us through Christ Jesus.

8For by grace you are saved through faith. This did not come from you. It is the gift of God.

9It is not by works, so no one can boast.

10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. God prepared these works beforehand, so that we should walk in them.

11So remember this. In the past you were Gentiles in the flesh. Those who call themselves the Circumcision, done in the flesh by human hands, called you the Uncircumcision.

12At that time you were without Christ. You were shut out from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope, and you were without God in the world.

13But now, in Christ Jesus, you who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

14For he is our peace. He has made the two into one, and has broken down the middle wall that divided us.

15In his flesh he has abolished the hatred, that is, the law of commandments contained in rules. His purpose was to make the two into one new man in himself, so making peace,

16and to reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, killing the hatred by it.

17He came and preached peace to you who were far off, and peace to those who were near.

18For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19So now you are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are fellow citizens with the saints, and members of the household of God.

20You are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and Jesus Christ himself is the chief corner stone.

21In him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

22In him you also are built together to be a dwelling place of God through the Spirit.

Explanation

Ephesians 2

In short

Paul tells believers that God has brought them from spiritual death into new life through Christ. He emphasizes that this salvation comes by grace and faith, not by their own effort, and that Christ has united Jews and Gentiles into one people.

Context

Paul is writing to the church at Ephesus, addressing both Jewish and Gentile believers. Earlier in the letter he described God's plan for the church. Now he turns to explain what this salvation means for them personally, and especially for the Gentiles among them who were once outsiders to God's people.

What the text says

Verses 1-3 describe the readers' former condition: they were spiritually "dead in trespasses and sins," living according to worldly values and the influence of "the prince of the power of the air," and naturally inclined toward God's wrath because of their desires and disobedience.

Verses 4-7 contrast this with God's action: God, rich in mercy and love, "quickened" them (made them alive) together with Christ, raised them up, and seated them in heavenly places. This display of grace will continue into eternity.

Verses 8-10 emphasize that salvation comes "by grace through faith," not by their own works, so no one can boast. They are "his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works."

Verses 11-13 address the Gentiles specifically: they were once "far off," separated from Israel's covenants and promises, but now "made nigh by the blood of Christ."

Verses 14-18 explain what Christ has done: he is their peace, has "broken down the middle wall of partition" between Jews and Gentiles, abolished the dividing law, created "one new man," and reconciled both groups to God in one body through the cross. Both now have access to the Father through one Spirit.

Verses 19-22 conclude with the image of believers as God's household, built as a temple with Christ as the cornerstone, growing into a holy dwelling place of God through the Spirit.

Takeaways

  • Salvation is God's work through Christ's death, received by grace and faith, not earned by human effort.
  • Christ has removed the barrier between Jews and Gentiles, making them one unified community in God.
  • Believers are now seated with Christ in heavenly places and are being built together as God's temple.
