Read 2 Kings Chapter 8

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Then Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had brought back to life. He said, "Get up, and go away with your household. Stay wherever you can stay. For the LORD has called for a famine, and it will come on the land for seven years."

So the woman got up and did what the man of God said. She went with her household and lived in the land of the Philistines for seven years.

At the end of the seven years the woman came back from the land of the Philistines. She went out to cry to the king for her house and for her land.

Now the king was talking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. He said, "Tell me, please, all the great things that Elisha has done."

While he was telling the king how Elisha had brought a dead body back to life, the woman whose son he had brought back to life came crying to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, "My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha brought back to life."

When the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king gave her an officer and said, "Give back everything that was hers, and all the crops of the field from the day she left the land until now."

Elisha came to Damascus. Benhadad the king of Syria was sick, and he was told, "The man of God has come here."

The king said to Hazael, "Take a gift in your hand, and go and meet the man of God. Ask the LORD through him, 'Will I get better from this sickness?'"

So Hazael went to meet him. He took a gift with him of every good thing of Damascus, a load for forty camels. He came and stood before him and said, "Your son Benhadad king of Syria has sent me to you to ask, 'Will I get better from this sickness?'"

Elisha said to him, "Go and say to him, 'You will certainly get better.' But the LORD has shown me that he will surely die."

He fixed his face and stared at him until Hazael was ashamed. And the man of God wept.

Hazael said, "Why is my lord weeping?" He answered, "Because I know the evil that you will do to the children of Israel. You will set their strongholds on fire, and kill their young men with the sword. You will dash their children to pieces, and rip open their pregnant women."

Hazael said, "But what is your servant? Am I a dog, that I should do such a great thing?" And Elisha answered, "The LORD has shown me that you will be king over Syria."

So he left Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, "What did Elisha say to you?" He answered, "He told me that you would surely get better."

The next day Hazael took a thick cloth, dipped it in water, and spread it over the king's face, so that he died. And Hazael became king in his place.

In the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, while Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.

He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab did, for Ahab's daughter was his wife. He did evil in the sight of the LORD.

Yet the LORD would not destroy Judah, for the sake of David his servant. He had promised to give him a lamp always, and to his children.

In his days Edom rebelled against the rule of Judah, and made a king over themselves.

So Joram crossed over to Zair with all his chariots. He got up by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him, and the commanders of the chariots. And the people fled to their tents.

Yet Edom has been in rebellion against the rule of Judah to this day. Libnah rebelled at the same time.

The rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Ahaziah his son became king in his place.

In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign.

Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel.

He walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as the house of Ahab did, for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab.

He went with Joram the son of Ahab to fight against Hazael king of Syria at Ramothgilead, and the Syrians wounded Joram.

King Joram went back to Jezreel to be healed of the wounds the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.
