Ahaziah fell through a lattice in his upper room in Samaria, and he was hurt and sick. So he sent messengers and said to them, "Go and ask Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will get well from this illness."
But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Get up, and go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria. Say to them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you go to ask Baalzebub, the god of Ekron?'"
"So this is what the LORD says: 'You will not come down from the bed you have gone up on. You will surely die.'" And Elijah went away.
When the messengers came back to the king, he said to them, "Why have you come back so soon?"
They said to him, "A man came up to meet us. He said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him, This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you send to ask Baalzebub, the god of Ekron? So you will not come down from the bed you have gone up on. You will surely die.'"
He said to them, "What kind of man was it who came up to meet you and told you these words?"
They answered him, "He was a hairy man, with a leather belt around his waist." And the king said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."
Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. The captain went up to him, and there he was, sitting on the top of a hill. He said to him, "Man of God, the king has said, Come down."
Elijah answered the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and burn up you and your fifty men." And fire came down from heaven and burned up him and his fifty men.
Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. He spoke and said to him, "Man of God, this is what the king has said: Come down quickly."
Elijah answered them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn up you and your fifty men." And the fire of God came down from heaven and burned up him and his fifty men.
Then the king sent a third captain of fifty with his fifty men. This third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah. He begged him and said, "Man of God, I pray you, let my life and the life of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight."
"Look, fire came down from heaven and burned up the two captains of the fifties before me, with their fifty men. So now let my life be precious in your sight."
The angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him. Do not be afraid of him." So he got up and went down with him to the king.
He said to him, "This is what the LORD says: You have sent messengers to ask Baalzebub, the god of Ekron. Is it because there is no God in Israel to ask for his word? So you will not come down from the bed you have gone up on. You will surely die."
So he died, just as the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram became king in his place, in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son.
The rest of the acts of Ahaziah, what he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
