Heavenly Sanctuary
The Heavenly Sanctuary is the true tabernacle in heaven where Christ serves as our High Priest, described primarily in Hebrews. The earthly tabernacle built by Moses was merely a copy and shadow of this heavenly reality. Here Christ entered once for all with His own blood, securing eternal redemption. He continually intercedes for believers before the Father's throne, making the heavenly sanctuary the place of our ongoing access to God's grace.
Historical Timeline
On Mount Sinai, God shows Moses the pattern of the heavenly sanctuary and commands him to build an earthly copy. The tabernacle and its furnishings are to be made according to the pattern shown on the mountain, indicating that a heavenly original exists.
Exodus 25:9, 40The prophet Isaiah sees a vision of the Lord seated on His throne in the heavenly temple, high and exalted. Seraphim surround the throne crying 'Holy, holy, holy.' The train of God's robe fills the temple, and smoke fills the house as an angel touches Isaiah's lips with a coal from the altar.
Isaiah 6:1-7Daniel sees the Ancient of Days take His seat in the heavenly court. Thrones are set in place, fire streams from His presence, and thousands upon thousands attend Him. The books are opened, and the Son of Man approaches the Ancient of Days to receive dominion and glory.
Daniel 7:9-14After His resurrection, Jesus ascends to heaven and enters the heavenly sanctuary. He sits down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven, having become a minister of the true tabernacle that the Lord pitched, not man. His entrance opens a new and living way for believers.
Hebrews 8:1-2Christ enters the Most Holy Place once for all, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood, securing eternal redemption. Unlike the earthly high priests who entered repeatedly, Christ's single sacrifice accomplishes what countless animal sacrifices could never do.
Hebrews 9:11-12Christ now appears in the presence of God on our behalf. He ever lives to make intercession for those who draw near to God through Him. Because He holds His priesthood permanently, He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him.
Hebrews 7:25John sees the heavenly sanctuary opened in his visions on Patmos. He witnesses the temple in heaven with its golden altar of incense, the ark of the covenant, and angels performing priestly duties. The prayers of the saints rise like incense before God's throne.
Revelation 11:19The temple of the tabernacle of testimony in heaven is opened, and seven angels come out with the seven last plagues. The temple fills with smoke from God's glory and power, and no one can enter until the seven plagues are completed.
