Melchizedek
King of Salem and Priest of God Most High
Melchizedek is one of the most mysterious figures in the Bible. He appears briefly in Genesis as king of Salem (later Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High, blessing Abraham and receiving a tithe from him after Abraham's victory over the kings. Without recorded genealogy, birth, or death, he is presented in Hebrews as a type of Christ—a priest forever whose priesthood is superior to the Levitical order. His dual role as king and priest foreshadows Jesus Christ, the ultimate King-Priest.

Christ's Superior Priesthood
Melchizedek's priesthood teaches us about the superiority of Christ's ministry. Unlike the Levitical priests who served temporarily and died, Jesus serves as priest forever 'in the order of Melchizedek.' His priesthood is based not on ancestry but on the power of an indestructible life, making Him able to save completely those who come to God through Him.
The Unity of King and Priest
In Israel, the roles of king and priest were strictly separated. Saul was rejected for offering sacrifice, and Uzziah was struck with leprosy for burning incense. But Melchizedek held both offices legitimately, foreshadowing Jesus who is both our reigning King and interceding Priest—the only one who can both rule over us and represent us before God.
