Melchizedek

Scholars hold different views. Some believe Melchizedek was a Christophany (pre-incarnate appearance of Christ). Others see him as a historical human king-priest whose lack of recorded genealogy in Genesis makes him a literary 'type' of Christ. Hebrews says he was 'made like the Son of God' (7:3), suggesting he resembles Christ rather than being Christ. Most scholars view him as a real historical figure whom God used to foreshadow the Messiah's eternal priesthood.

Abraham's tithe acknowledged Melchizedek's priestly authority and superior position. In ancient Near Eastern culture, giving a tenth of war spoils to a deity or priest was a way of honoring them and attributing victory to their god. The author of Hebrews uses this to argue that Melchizedek's priesthood is superior to the Levitical priesthood, since Levi (through Abraham) paid tithes to Melchizedek. This establishes Christ's priesthood as greater than the Old Covenant system.

At the basic level, bread and wine were provisions to refresh Abraham and his men after battle. However, many see deeper significance: these same elements would later be used by Jesus at the Last Supper to represent His body and blood. Some church fathers saw Melchizedek's offering as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist. Whether intentional typology or not, the parallel is striking—a priest bringing bread and wine to bless God's people.
