Romans 5 - Simple English

Read Romans Chapter 5

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1So then, since we have been made right with God by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2Through him we have also been brought by faith into this grace in which we stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

3And not only that, but we also glory in our troubles. For we know that trouble produces patience,

4and patience produces experience, and experience produces hope.

5And hope does not put us to shame, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

6For when we were still without strength, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

7It is rare for anyone to die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.

8But God shows his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9So how much more, now that we have been made right with God by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

10For if, when we were enemies, we were brought back to God by the death of his Son, how much more, now that we are brought back, we shall be saved by his life.

11And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have now received the atonement.

12So then, sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin. And so death spread to all people, because all have sinned.

13(For sin was in the world before the law was given. But sin is not charged against anyone when there is no law.

14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the same way that Adam broke God's command. Adam is a picture of the one who was to come.

15But the free gift is not like the offence. For if many died through the offence of one man, how much more did the grace of God, and the gift that comes by grace, overflow to many through the one man, Jesus Christ.

16And the gift is not like what came through the one man who sinned. For the judgment came from one offence and brought condemnation, but the free gift came after many offences and brought righteousness.

17For if death reigned through one man because of that one man's offence, how much more will those who receive the overflowing grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.)

18So then, as one offence brought judgment and condemnation to all people, in the same way one act of righteousness brought the free gift to all people, and with it the righteousness that gives life.

19For as many were made sinners by one man's disobedience, so many will be made righteous by the obedience of one man.

20The law came in as well, so that the offence might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased much more.

21So that, as sin has reigned and brought death, in the same way grace might reign through righteousness and bring eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Explanation

Romans 5

In short

Paul shows that because Christ died for us and freed us from sin's penalty, we can have peace with God right now and confidence in our future salvation. He then explains how Christ's obedience and death undo what Adam's disobedience brought into the world, with God's grace far exceeding the damage sin caused.

Context

Paul has just finished arguing that people are declared right with God through faith, not by keeping the law. Romans 5 begins with the word "Therefore" and develops what this justification means for believers. Paul is writing to a mixed community of Jews and non-Jews in Rome to help them understand salvation and God's plan.

What the text says

Verses 1-2: Because we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through Christ and access to God's grace, and we look forward to sharing in God's glory. Verses 3-5: Believers can even celebrate hardships, because hardship builds patience, patience builds proven character, and character creates hope. This hope does not disappoint because God's love fills our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Verses 6-8: Christ died for us when we were helpless and sinners, which shows God's love differently than human love would. Verses 9-11: Since Christ's blood justifies us, we are saved from God's anger. We were enemies of God, but Christ's death reconciled us to him, and now we celebrate this through Christ.

Verses 12-14: Sin entered the world through Adam, and death followed sin. Death came to everyone because all sinned. The law came later, but death reigned even before the law existed. Verses 15-17: Christ is the answer to Adam. Where Adam's sin brought death to many, Christ's grace and gift bring life to many. Those who receive grace will reign in life through Christ.

Verses 18-21: As Adam's one act brought condemnation to all, Christ's one act of obedience brings justification to all. The law made sin obvious, but where sin increased, grace overflowed far more. As sin brought death, grace brings eternal life through Christ.

Takeaways

  • Justification through faith brings peace with God now and hope for glory, even amid present suffering.
  • Christ's death for us when we were helpless shows God's love is greater than human love could be.
  • Adam's disobedience brought death to humanity, but Christ's obedience brings righteousness and life that far exceeds what sin damaged.
