King Arad the Canaanite lived in the south. When he heard that Israel was coming by the way of the spies, he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoner.
Then Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, "If you will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will completely destroy their cities."
The LORD listened to the voice of Israel and gave the Canaanites over to them. Israel completely destroyed them and their cities. So he called the name of the place Hormah.
They travelled from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became very discouraged because of the journey.
The people spoke against God and against Moses. "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, and there is no water, and we hate this poor food."
Then the LORD sent fiery snakes among the people. They bit the people, and many of the people of Israel died.
So the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he may take the snakes away from us." And Moses prayed for the people.
The LORD said to Moses, "Make yourself a fiery snake and set it on a pole. Then everyone who is bitten will live when he looks at it."
So Moses made a snake of brass and put it on a pole. And if a snake had bitten someone, when he looked at the snake of brass, he lived.
The children of Israel moved on and camped in Oboth.
They travelled from Oboth and camped at Ijeabarim, in the wilderness that is in front of Moab, toward the sunrise.
From there they moved on and camped in the valley of Zared.
From there they moved on and camped on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the lands of the Amorites. For Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
That is why it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, "What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,"
"and at the stream of the brooks that goes down to the dwelling of Ar, and lies along the border of Moab."
From there they went to Beer. That is the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people together, and I will give them water."
Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well; sing to it."
"The princes dug the well, the nobles of the people dug it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staffs." And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah,
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
and from Bamoth in the valley, which is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks toward Jeshimon.
Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
"Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into the fields or into the vineyards. We will not drink the water of the well. We will go along by the king's high way, until we have passed your borders."
But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border. Instead Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel into the wilderness. He came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.
Israel struck him down with the edge of the sword and took his land, from Arnon to Jabbok, as far as the children of Ammon. For the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
Israel took all these cities. And Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages.
For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites. He had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land from him, as far as Arnon.
That is why those who speak in proverbs say, "Come into Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and made ready."
For a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has burned up Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.
Woe to you, Moab. You are ruined, O people of Chemosh. He has given his sons who escaped, and his daughters, into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites.
"We have shot at them. Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon, and we have laid them waste as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba."
So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
Moses sent men to spy out Jaazer. They took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.
Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
The LORD said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him. For I have given him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. You shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon."
So they struck him down, and his sons, and all his people, until not one of them was left alive. And they took his land.
