Read Matthew Chapter 22

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

The kingdom of heaven is like a king who made a wedding feast for his son.

He sent out his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding, but they would not come.

Again he sent out other servants, saying, "Tell those who were invited, 'Look, I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and my fat cattle are killed, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding.'"

But they took no notice of it, and went off, one to his farm, another to his business.

The rest took hold of his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.

But when the king heard of it, he was angry. He sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy."

"So go out to the main roads, and invite to the wedding as many as you find."

So those servants went out to the roads and gathered together all they found, both bad and good; and the wedding was filled with guests.

When the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not wearing a wedding garment.

He said to him, "Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?" And the man had nothing to say.

Then the king said to the servants, "Tie him hand and foot, and take him away, and throw him into the darkness outside. There people will weep and grind their teeth."

For many are called, but few are chosen.

Then the Pharisees went away and made a plan to trap him in his own words.

They sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and that you teach the way of God truly. You do not care what anyone thinks, for you do not judge by who people are."

"So tell us what you think. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?"

But Jesus knew their wickedness, and said, "Why do you test me, you hypocrites?"

"Show me the tribute money." And they brought him a penny.

He said to them, "Whose image and name are on this?"

They said to him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "So give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

When they heard these words, they were amazed. They left him and went away.

That same day the Sadducees came to him. They are the ones who say there is no resurrection. They asked him,

"Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up children for his brother."

Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married a wife and died, and because he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.

The same happened with the second, and the third, down to the seventh.

Last of all the woman died too.

"So in the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her."

Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you do not know the scriptures, nor the power of God."

For in the resurrection people do not marry, and are not given in marriage, but they are like the angels of God in heaven.

But about the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying,

"'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living."

When the crowd heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.

Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. He said,

"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"

Jesus said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind."

This is the first and great commandment.

And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

"On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

"What do you think about Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The Son of David."

He said to them, "How then does David in spirit call him Lord? He says,"

'The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.'

"If David then calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

No one was able to answer him a word, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
