At that time Jesus walked through the grainfields on the sabbath day. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pick the ears of grain and eat them.
When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath day."
But he said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him?"
He went into the house of God and ate the holy bread. It was not lawful for him to eat it, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests.
Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are not blamed for it?
But I say to you that in this place is one greater than the temple.
If you had known what this means, 'I want mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned those who are not guilty.
"For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day."
When he had left there, he went into their synagogue.
Look, there was a man there whose hand was withered. They asked Jesus, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days?" They asked so that they could accuse him.
He said to them, "Which one of you, if he had one sheep, and it fell into a pit on the sabbath day, would not take hold of it and lift it out?"
"How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath days."
Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and it was made well again, like the other one.
Then the Pharisees went out and made a plan against him, how they might destroy him.
But when Jesus knew it, he went away from there. Great crowds followed him, and he healed them all.
He ordered them not to make him known.
This was so that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might come true. He said:
"Look at my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul takes delight. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will show judgment to the Gentiles."
He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoking wick he will not put out, until he brings judgment to victory.
"And in his name the Gentiles will trust."
Then a man was brought to him who had a demon, and was blind and could not speak. Jesus healed him, so that the blind and speechless man both spoke and saw.
All the people were amazed, and said, "Is not this the son of David?"
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This man does not drive out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons."
Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to ruin. Every city or house divided against itself will not stand."
If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?
And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your children drive them out? So they will be your judges.
But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
How else can anyone go into a strong man's house and take away his goods, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
So I say to you, every kind of sin and every evil word spoken against God will be forgiven to people. But speaking against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
Whoever speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, not in this world, nor in the world to come.
Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad. For the tree is known by its fruit.
You family of vipers, how can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks out of what fills the heart.
A good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart. An evil man brings evil things out of his evil treasure.
But I say to you that people will give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they speak.
"For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you."
But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation looks for a sign. But no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah."
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so the Son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it. For they repented when Jonah preached, and look, one greater than Jonah is here.
The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it. For she came from the farthest parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and look, one greater than Solomon is here.
When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it walks through dry places, looking for rest, and finds none.
Then it says, 'I will go back to my house that I came out of.' When it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.
"Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself. They go in and live there. And the last state of that man is worse than the first. So it will be also with this wicked generation."
While he was still talking to the people, look, his mother and his brothers stood outside, wanting to speak with him.
Then someone said to him, "Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak with you."
But he answered the man who told him, "Who is my mother? And who are my brothers?"
He stretched out his hand toward his disciples and said, "Look at my mother and my brothers."
"For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother."
