Then the whole crowd of them got up and took him to Pilate.
They began to accuse him. They said, "We found this man leading our nation astray. He tells people not to pay taxes to Caesar, and he says that he himself is Christ, a King."
Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say it."
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and to the people, "I find no fault in this man."
But they grew more fierce. They said, "He stirs up the people. He teaches all through Jewry. He began in Galilee, and he has come as far as this place."
When Pilate heard about Galilee, he asked whether the man was a Galilaean.
As soon as he learned that Jesus came under Herod's rule, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad. He had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him, and he hoped to see him do some miracle.
So he questioned him with many words, but Jesus answered him nothing.
The chief priests and scribes stood there and accused him fiercely.
Herod and his soldiers treated him as nothing and mocked him. They dressed him in a splendid robe and sent him back to Pilate.
That same day Pilate and Herod became friends, for before this they had been enemies.
Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people.
He said to them, "You have brought this man to me as one who leads the people astray. Look, I have examined him in front of you, and I have found no fault in this man in the things you accuse him of."
"Neither has Herod, for I sent you to him. Look, he has done nothing that deserves death."
"So I will punish him and let him go."
(For he had to release one prisoner to them at the feast.)
But they all cried out together, "Away with this man. Release Barabbas to us."
(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for starting a riot in the city, and for murder.)
Pilate wanted to release Jesus, so he spoke to them again.
But they shouted, "Crucify him, crucify him."
He said to them a third time, "Why? What evil has he done? I have found nothing in him that deserves death. So I will punish him and let him go."
But they kept pressing him with loud voices, demanding that he be crucified. And their voices and the voices of the chief priests won.
So Pilate gave his sentence: it should be as they demanded.
He released to them the man they had asked for, the man who had been thrown into prison for rioting and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.
As they led him away, they took hold of a man named Simon, from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country. They laid the cross on him, to carry it behind Jesus.
A great crowd of people followed him, and women who wept and mourned for him.
But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children."
"Look, the days are coming when people will say, 'Happy are the women who cannot have children, and the wombs that never bore a child, and the breasts that never fed one.'"
"Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us,' and to the hills, 'Cover us.'"
"For if they do these things to a green tree, what will be done to the dry one?"
Two others were also led out with him to be put to death. They were criminals.
When they came to the place called Calvary, they crucified him there, and the criminals too, one on his right hand and the other on his left.
Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided his clothes among them, casting lots.
The people stood watching. The rulers with them mocked him too. They said, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God."
The soldiers also mocked him. They came to him and offered him vinegar,
and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."
A notice was also written above him, in Greek and Latin and Hebrew letters: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
One of the criminals who hung there insulted him. He said, "If you are the Christ, save yourself and us."
But the other one answered and rebuked him. He said, "Do you not fear God? You are under the same sentence."
"And we are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the earth until the ninth hour.
The sun was darkened, and the curtain of the temple was torn down the middle.
Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, "Father, into your hands I give my spirit." When he had said this, he died.
When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God. He said, "Certainly this was a righteous man."
All the people who had come together to see it watched what was done. They beat their breasts and went home.
All those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood far off and watched these things.
Look, there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council. He was a good man, and just.
(He had not agreed with their plan and what they did.) He came from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, and he was waiting for the kingdom of God.
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
He took it down and wrapped it in linen. He laid it in a tomb cut out of rock, where no one had ever been laid before.
That day was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin.
The women who had come with him from Galilee followed as well. They saw the tomb, and how his body was laid.
Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments. And they rested on the sabbath day, as the commandment says.
