Read Leviticus Chapter 21

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, 'None of you is to make himself unclean for a dead person among his people,"

'except for a close relative: for his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, or his brother,

'and for his sister who is a virgin and close to him, who has had no husband. For her he may make himself unclean.

'But he must not make himself unclean as a leading man among his people, and so profane himself.

'They must not shave their heads bald, or shave off the edges of their beards, or cut their flesh.

'They shall be holy to their God, and not profane the name of their God. For they offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire, the bread of their God. So they shall be holy.

'They must not marry a woman who is a prostitute or who has been made unclean, and they must not marry a woman divorced from her husband. For the priest is holy to his God.

'So you shall treat him as holy, because he offers the bread of your God. He shall be holy to you, for I the LORD, who make you holy, am holy.

'If the daughter of any priest makes herself unclean by acting as a prostitute, she profanes her father. She shall be burned with fire.

'The high priest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil was poured, and who was set apart to wear the holy garments, must not leave his hair uncovered or tear his clothes.

'He must not go near any dead body. He must not make himself unclean even for his father or his mother.

'He must not go out of the sanctuary, or profane the sanctuary of his God, for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him. I am the LORD.

'He shall take a wife who is a virgin.

'A widow, a divorced woman, a woman who has been made unclean, or a prostitute - these he must not take. He shall marry a virgin from his own people,

"'so that he does not profane his children among his people. For I the LORD make him holy.'"

The LORD spoke to Moses and said,

"Speak to Aaron and say, 'If any of your descendants in the generations to come has any defect, he must not come near to offer the bread of his God."

'No man with a defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, or who has a damaged face, or any part of his body too large,

'or a man with a broken foot or a broken hand,

'or a hunched back, or who is a dwarf, or who has a defect in his eye, or who has sores or scabs, or whose testicles are crushed.

'No descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect may come near to offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire. He has a defect. He must not come near to offer the bread of his God.

'He may eat the bread of his God, both the most holy food and the holy food.

"'Only he must not go in to the veil or come near the altar, because he has a defect. He must not profane my holy places, for I the LORD make them holy.'"

So Moses told this to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all the children of Israel.
