Read Jeremiah Chapter 20

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Now Pashur the son of Immer was a priest, and he was also the chief officer in the house of the LORD. He heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.

Then Pashur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, beside the house of the LORD.

The next day Pashur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD has not called your name Pashur, but Magormissabib."

"For this is what the LORD says: Look, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your own eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He will carry them away captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword."

"More than that, I will hand over all the wealth of this city, and all it has worked for, and all its precious things. All the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies. They will plunder them, and seize them, and carry them to Babylon."

"And you, Pashur, and all who live in your house will go into captivity. You will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied lies."

LORD, you deceived me, and I was deceived. You are stronger than I am, and you have won. I am laughed at all day long; everyone mocks me.

For whenever I speak, I cry out; I shout, "Violence and ruin." So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and scorn all day long.

Then I said, "I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name." But his word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I grew weary of holding it in, and I could not.

For I heard many whispering against me: "Terror on every side. Report him, and we will report him." All my close friends watched for me to fall, saying, "Perhaps he will be tricked, and we will win against him, and take our revenge on him."

But the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior who brings terror. So those who hunt me will stumble, and they will not win. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not succeed. Their everlasting disgrace will never be forgotten.

But, LORD of hosts, you test the righteous; you see the heart and the deepest thoughts. Let me see your vengeance on them, for I have laid my case before you.

Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD. For he has rescued the life of the poor from the hand of evildoers.

Cursed be the day I was born. Let the day my mother gave birth to me not be blessed.

Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, "A son is born to you," and made him very glad.

Let that man be like the cities the LORD overthrew without pity. Let him hear an outcry in the morning and a battle shout at noon,

because he did not kill me in the womb, so that my mother would have been my grave, and her womb great with me for ever.

Why did I ever come out of the womb, to see trouble and sorrow, and to spend my days in shame?
