Read Isaiah Chapter 63

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Who is this who comes from Edom, in bright red garments from Bozrah? Who is this, glorious in his clothing, marching in the greatness of his strength? "It is I, who speak in righteousness, mighty to save."

Why are you red in your clothing, and your garments like one who treads in the winepress?

"I have trodden the winepress alone. Of the peoples there was no one with me. I trod them down in my anger, and trampled them in my fury. Their blood was sprinkled on my garments, and I stained all my clothing."

For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of those I have redeemed has come.

I looked, and there was no one to help. I was amazed that there was no one to give support. So my own arm brought me salvation, and my fury upheld me.

"I will tread down the peoples in my anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring their strength down to the ground."

I will speak of the loving kindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD. I will speak of all that the LORD has given us, and of his great goodness to the house of Israel, which he gave them because of his mercies, and because of the greatness of his loving kindnesses.

For he said, "Surely they are my people, children who will not lie." So he became their Saviour.

In all their trouble he was troubled, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy, and he fought against them.

Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people. He said, "Where is he who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he who put his holy Spirit among them?"

Where is he who led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water in front of them, to make himself an everlasting name?

"Where is he who led them through the deep, so that they did not stumble, like a horse in the wilderness?"

As cattle go down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. So you led your people, to make yourself a glorious name.

Look down from heaven. See from your holy and glorious home. Where is your zeal and your strength? Where is the stirring of your inmost heart and of your mercies toward me? Are they held back?

Yet you are our father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not recognise us. You, LORD, are our father. Our redeemer is your name from everlasting.

LORD, why have you made us wander from your ways, and hardened our heart so that we do not fear you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes that are your inheritance.

Your holy people held it only a little while. Our enemies have trodden down your sanctuary.

We are yours. You never ruled over them; they were not called by your name.
