The burden of Tyre. Wail, you ships of Tarshish. Tyre is laid waste. No house is left, and no way in. From the land of Chittim the news is revealed to them.
Be still, you people of the island. The merchants of Zidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
Over great waters came the grain of Sihor, the harvest of the river. That was her income, and she was a market for the nations.
Be ashamed, Zidon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea. It says, "I have not been in labour, nor given birth. I have not raised young men, nor brought up virgins."
When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in bitter pain at the news of Tyre.
Cross over to Tarshish. Wail, you people of the island.
Is this your joyful city, so old, from ancient days? Her own feet will carry her far away to live as a stranger.
Who planned this against Tyre, the city that gave out crowns? Her merchants are princes, and her traders are the honoured ones of the earth.
The LORD of hosts planned it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honoured ones of the earth.
Pass through your land like a river, daughter of Tarshish. There is no strength left.
He stretched out his hand over the sea. He shook the kingdoms. The LORD has given a command against the merchant city, to destroy its strongholds.
And he said, "You will not rejoice any more, you crushed virgin, daughter of Zidon. Get up, cross over to Chittim. Even there you will have no rest."
Look at the land of the Chaldeans. This people did not exist until the Assyrian founded it for those who live in the wilderness. They set up its towers, they raised up its palaces. And he brought it to ruin.
Wail, you ships of Tarshish, for your strength is laid waste.
In that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, as long as the days of one king. After the seventy years are over, Tyre will sing like a prostitute.
Take a harp, go round the city, you forgotten prostitute. Make sweet music, sing many songs, so that you may be remembered.
After the seventy years are over, the LORD will visit Tyre. She will go back to her hire, and will commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth.
But her goods and her hire will be holiness to the LORD. They will not be stored up or hoarded. Her goods will go to those who live before the LORD, for food enough and for lasting clothing.
