Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Again the word of the LORD came to me:

"Son of man, make Jerusalem know her detestable deeds."

"Say, 'This is what the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your birth and your beginning are from the land of Canaan. Your father was an Amorite, and your mother a Hittite."

"'As for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut. You were not washed in water to make you smooth. You were not rubbed with salt at all, and you were not wrapped in cloths at all."

"'No eye pitied you, to do any of these things for you or to have compassion on you. Instead you were thrown out in the open field, because you were loathed on the day you were born."

"'When I passed by you, I saw you covered with your own blood. And I said to you as you lay in your blood, 'Live.' Yes, I said to you as you lay in your blood, 'Live.'"

"'I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew up and became tall, and you came to have fine beauty. Your breasts were formed and your hair had grown, but you were naked and bare."

"'When I passed by you and looked at you, look, your time was the time of love. So I spread my robe over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I made an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord GOD, and you became mine."

"'Then I washed you with water. I washed your blood right off you, and I anointed you with oil."

"'I clothed you also with embroidered cloth, and put shoes of badgers' skin on your feet. I wrapped you about with fine linen, and covered you with silk."

"'I adorned you with ornaments. I put bracelets on your hands and a chain on your neck."

"'I put a jewel on your forehead, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head."

"'So you were adorned with gold and silver. Your clothing was fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You were very beautiful, and you prospered into a kingdom."

"'Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendour I had put on you, says the Lord GOD."

"'But you trusted in your own beauty, and you acted as a prostitute because of your fame. You poured out your immoral acts on everyone who passed by; it was his."

"'You took some of your clothes and decked out your high places with many colours, and there you acted as a prostitute. Such things should not come, and it should not be so."

"'You also took the beautiful jewels of my gold and my silver, which I had given you, and you made for yourself images of men, and you were unfaithful with them."

"'You took your embroidered clothes and covered them. And you set my oil and my incense before them."

"'My food also which I gave you, the fine flour and oil and honey that I fed you with, you set before them as a sweet smell. And so it was, says the Lord GOD."

"'What is more, you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and you sacrificed them to those images to be eaten up. Was your unfaithfulness a small matter,"

"'that you killed my children and handed them over, making them pass through the fire for those images?"

"'In all your detestable deeds and your unfaithfulness you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, lying covered in your blood."

"'Then, after all your wickedness (woe, woe to you, says the Lord GOD),"

"'you also built yourself a mound, and you made yourself a high place in every street."

"'At the top of every road you built your high place, and you made your beauty hated. You opened your feet to everyone who passed by, and you increased your acts of prostitution."

"'You also were immoral with the Egyptians, your neighbours, great of flesh, and you increased your prostitution to make me angry."

"'So look, I stretched out my hand over you and cut down your daily food. I gave you over to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your shameful way."

"'You acted as a prostitute with the Assyrians too, because you could not be filled. Yes, you were a prostitute with them, and still you could not be satisfied."

"'You increased your immoral acts still more, in the land of Canaan as far as Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied."

"'How weak is your heart, says the Lord GOD, seeing you do all these things, the work of a bold and prostitute woman,"

"'in that you build your mound at the top of every road, and make your high place in every street. Yet you have not been like a prostitute, for you scorn payment."

"'You are like a wife who commits adultery, who takes strangers instead of her husband."

"'Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you give your gifts to all your lovers. You pay them to come to you from every side for your prostitution."

"'So in your prostitution you are the opposite of other women. No one runs after you to be immoral with you. You give the payment, and no payment is given to you. So you are the opposite."

"'Therefore, prostitute, hear the word of the LORD."

"'This is what the Lord GOD says: Your filth was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your prostitution with your lovers, and with all the idols of your detestable deeds, and by the blood of your children, which you gave to them."

"'So look, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you took pleasure, and all those you loved, along with all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side, and I will uncover your nakedness to them, so that they may see all your nakedness."

"'I will judge you as women who break their marriage and shed blood are judged. I will give you blood in fury and jealousy."

"'I will give you into their hand. They will throw down your mound and break down your high places. They will strip you of your clothes and take your beautiful jewels, and leave you naked and bare."

"'They will bring up a crowd against you. They will stone you with stones and run you through with their swords."

"'They will burn your houses with fire and carry out judgments on you while many women watch. I will make you stop being a prostitute, and you will pay no fees any more."

"'Then my fury against you will rest, and my jealousy will turn away from you. I will be quiet, and I will not be angry any more."

"'Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but troubled me with all these things, look, I too will bring your way back on your own head, says the Lord GOD. And you will not do this shameful thing on top of all your detestable deeds."

"'Look, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: 'As the mother is, so is her daughter.'"

"'You are your mother's daughter, who hated her husband and her children. You are the sister of your sisters, who hated their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite."

"'Your elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters who live at your left hand. Your younger sister, who lives at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters."

"'Yet you did not walk in their ways, nor do the detestable things that they did. As if that were a very little thing, you became more corrupt than they in all your ways."

"'As surely as I live, says the Lord GOD, your sister Sodom has not done, she and her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters."

"'Look, this was the sin of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were proud, they had plenty of food, and they had much idle ease; and she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."

"'They were arrogant and did detestable things before me. So I took them away when I saw it was right."

"'Samaria did not commit half of your sins. You have done far more detestable things than they, and you have made your sisters look righteous by all the detestable things you have done."

"'You also, who judged your sisters, must bear your own shame for the sins you have committed, which are more detestable than theirs. They are more righteous than you. Yes, be ashamed also, and bear your shame, because you have made your sisters look righteous."

"'When I bring back their captives, the captives of Sodom and her daughters, and the captives of Samaria and her daughters, then I will bring back your captives along with them,"

"'so that you may bear your own shame, and be ashamed for all that you have done, in that you are a comfort to them."

"'When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to what they were before, and Samaria and her daughters return to what they were before, then you and your daughters will return to what you were before."

"'For your sister Sodom was not even named by your mouth in the day of your pride,"

"'before your wickedness was uncovered, as at the time of the scorn of the daughters of Syria, and all those around her, the daughters of the Philistines, who despise you on every side."

"'You have borne your shameful deeds and your detestable deeds, says the LORD."

"'For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you as you have done, you who despised the oath and broke the covenant."

"'Yet I will remember my covenant with you from the days of your youth, and I will set up an everlasting covenant with you."

"'Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your sisters, both your elder and your younger. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant."

"'I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD,"

"'so that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I am at peace with you for all that you have done, says the Lord GOD.'"
