Ephesians 5 - Simple English

OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read Ephesians Chapter 5

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1So then, follow God's example, as dear children do.

2And walk in love, just as Christ also loved us. He gave himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God, a sweet-smelling gift.

3But sexual sin, and every kind of uncleanness, or greed, must not even be named among you. That is fitting for saints.

4There must be no filthy talk, no foolish talk, no coarse joking. These are not proper. Instead, give thanks.

5For you know this: no one who is sexually immoral, or unclean, or greedy (such a person worships idols) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6Let no one deceive you with empty words. It is because of such things that the wrath of God comes on those who disobey.

7So do not take part with them.

8For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.

9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.)

10Find out what pleases the Lord.

11Have nothing to do with the fruitless works of darkness. Instead, show them up for what they are.

12For it is shameful even to speak of the things they do in secret.

13But everything that is shown up is made plain by the light, for whatever makes things plain is light.

14That is why he says, "Wake up, you who are sleeping, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light."

15So be careful how you walk. Do not live as fools, but as wise people,

16making the most of the time, because the days are evil.

17So do not be foolish. Understand what the will of the Lord is.

18Do not get drunk with wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

19Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.

20Always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

21Submit to one another in the fear of God.

22Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23For the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. And he is the Saviour of the body.

24So, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let wives be to their own husbands in everything.

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it,

26so that he might make it holy and clean, washing it with water by the word,

27so that he might present it to himself as a glorious church, with no spot or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and without any flaw.

28In the same way, men ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.

29For no one ever hated his own flesh. He feeds it and cares for it, just as the Lord does for the church.

30For we are parts of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two of them will be one flesh."

32This is a great mystery, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.

33Even so, let each one of you love his wife as he loves himself. And the wife must see that she respects her husband.

Explanation

Ephesians 5

In short

Paul calls Christians to imitate God's character through love and holy living, rejecting sexual sin and impurity. He then describes how marriage, especially the relationship between husband and wife, reflects Christ's love for the church and demonstrates a profound spiritual truth.

Context

Paul is writing to the church at Ephesus, continuing his instruction on Christian conduct. He has just finished urging them to stop living as unbelievers. Now he gives practical guidance on how believers should live, building toward specific instructions for different groups within the church.

What the text says

Verses 1-2 open with a call to imitate God as loved children and walk in love, using Christ's self-giving as the model. Verses 3-7 warn against sexual sin, impurity, and greed. These things should not be named among saints; instead, thanksgiving should mark the community. Verse 5 states such sins have no place in God's kingdom, and verse 6 warns against being deceived by arguments that minimize this.

Verses 8-14 use light-and-darkness language. Believers were "darkness" but are now "light in the Lord" and should walk accordingly, avoiding fruitless works of darkness. Verses 15-17 urge wise, careful living and understanding God's will. Verses 18-20 command avoiding drunkenness and instead being filled with the Spirit, expressed through psalms, hymns, and giving thanks.

Verses 21-33 address household relationships. Wives should submit to husbands "as unto the Lord" (verse 22). Verse 23 states the husband is head as Christ is head of the church. Verses 25-27 command husbands to love their wives as Christ loved and gave himself for the church to make her holy. Verses 28-30 argue men should love their wives as their own bodies. Verse 31 quotes Genesis on leaving parents and becoming one flesh. Verse 32 calls this a "great mystery" concerning Christ and the church. Verse 33 restates the mutual obligation: husbands to love, wives to respect.

Takeaways

  • Believers are called to reflect God's character through love and separation from sexual sin and impurity.
  • The relationship between Christ and the church is the pattern for how husbands and wives should relate to each other.
  • Practical choices about speech, time, and sobriety are marks of living as children of light.
