OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read 1 Timothy Chapter 4

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Now the Spirit says clearly that in the last times some people will turn away from the faith. They will listen to spirits that lead them astray, and to the teachings of devils.

2Such teachers tell lies and pretend to be what they are not. Their conscience has been burned as if with a hot iron.

3They forbid people to marry, and they order them to keep away from certain foods. But God made those foods to be received with thanks by those who believe and know the truth.

4For everything God made is good. Nothing is to be refused, if it is received with thanks.

5For it is made holy by the word of God and by prayer.

6If you remind the brothers and sisters of these things, you will be a good servant of Jesus Christ. You will be fed by the words of faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.

7But have nothing to do with unholy stories and old wives' tales. Train yourself instead to live a godly life.

8Training the body is of some small use, but godliness is useful for everything. It holds a promise for the life we have now, and for the life that is to come.

9This is a true saying, and everyone should accept it.

10This is why we work hard and are insulted: because we trust in the living God. He is the Saviour of all people, and especially of those who believe.

11Command these things and teach them.

12Let no one look down on you because you are young. Instead, be an example to the believers in your speech, in your conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.

13Until I come, give your attention to reading, to encouraging others, and to teaching.

14Do not neglect the gift that is in you. It was given to you by prophecy, when the elders laid their hands on you.

15Think carefully about these things. Give yourself completely to them, so that everyone may see how you are growing.

16Watch yourself, and watch your teaching. Keep on in them. For by doing this you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

Explanation

1 Timothy 4

In short

Paul warns Timothy that false teachers will try to lead believers away from the faith by forbidding marriage and certain foods, claiming these things are evil when God made them good. Paul then tells Timothy how to be a faithful minister: stay nourished in true doctrine, exercise himself in godliness rather than worthless ideas, set a good example despite his youth, and give himself fully to reading, teaching, and the spiritual gift he has received.

Context

This letter is Paul writing to Timothy, a young church leader. Paul has already instructed Timothy on how to handle false teachers in his community. Now he turns to warn Timothy about deceptive teachings that will appear in future times, and to encourage Timothy to stand firm and lead well despite being young.

What the text says

Verses 1-3 state that the Holy Spirit himself says some will abandon the faith by listening to deceiving spirits and false doctrines. These false teachers speak lies while pretending to be righteous, their consciences hardened. They forbid marriage and command people to avoid certain foods, even though God created those foods to be eaten with gratitude.

Verses 4-5 explain the truth: everything God created is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because God's word and prayer make it holy.

Verses 6-7 tell Timothy that if he reminds believers of these truths, he will be a good minister, built up by faith and sound teaching. He should reject pointless myths and instead exercise himself toward godliness.

Verses 8-10 note that physical training has limited value, but godliness benefits everything and promises life now and in the future. This statement is trustworthy. Paul and others work and endure hardship because they trust God, who saves all people, especially believers.

Verses 11-16 direct Timothy to command and teach these things, not to let others look down on him for his youth but to be an example in conduct, love, faith, and purity. He should focus on reading, exhortation, and doctrine until Paul arrives. He must not neglect the spiritual gift given to him through prophecy and the laying on of hands. Timothy should meditate on these things, give himself fully to them, and be careful about himself and his teaching, because doing so will save both himself and those who hear him.

Takeaways

  • False teachers twist God's creation into rules about what is forbidden, but God intends his creation to be received with gratitude.
  • Godliness, not physical training or empty stories, is what truly matters and promises real benefit.
  • A young leader serves best by setting a personal example and staying committed to sound teaching, even when others might dismiss him.
