Ananias of Damascus

Ananias received a vision from the Lord instructing him to go to Straight Street and find Saul of Tarsus, who was praying and had seen a vision of a man named Ananias coming to restore his sight. Despite his initial fear of Saul's reputation as a persecutor of Christians, Ananias obeyed the divine command.

Ananias expressed his concerns to the Lord about Saul's violent persecution of believers in Jerusalem, having heard reports of Saul's mission to arrest Christians in Damascus. The Lord reassured him that Saul was His chosen instrument to carry the Gospel to the Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.

Ananias went to the house on Straight Street where Saul was staying and laid hands on him, addressing him as 'Brother Saul.' He explained that Jesus had sent him so that Saul might regain his sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately, scales fell from Saul's eyes and he could see again.

After Saul's sight was restored, Ananias baptized him, marking the formal beginning of Paul's Christian life and ministry. This act of baptism represented Saul's complete transformation from persecutor to proclaimer of the Gospel.

Years later, Paul recounted his conversion experience to a hostile crowd in Jerusalem, specifically mentioning Ananias as 'a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there.' Paul emphasized how Ananias had told him that God had chosen him to know His will and see the Just One.
