We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what work you did in their days, in the times long ago.
You drove out the nations with your hand, and planted our fathers in their place. You brought trouble on those peoples, and cast them out.
They did not win the land by their own sword, and their own arm did not save them. It was your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you favoured them.
You are my King, O God. Command deliverance for Jacob.
Through you we will push down our enemies. Through your name we will trample those who rise up against us.
For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword will not save me.
But you have saved us from our enemies, and have put those who hated us to shame.
In God we boast all day long, and we praise your name for ever. Selah.
But now you have cast us off and put us to shame. You do not go out with our armies.
You make us turn back from the enemy, and those who hate us take our goods for themselves.
You have given us up like sheep set aside for food, and you have scattered us among the nations.
You sell your people for nothing, and you gain no wealth from their price.
You make us something our neighbours mock, a thing of scorn and laughter to those around us.
You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
My disgrace is before me all the time, and shame has covered my face,
because of the voice of the one who insults and blasphemes, because of the enemy who takes revenge.
All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not strayed from your way,
though you have crushed us badly in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god,
will not God find this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.
Yes, for your sake we are killed all day long. We are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Awake. Why do you sleep, O Lord? Rise up, do not cast us off for ever.
Why do you hide your face, and forget our suffering and our oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our body clings to the earth.
Rise up to help us, and set us free for the sake of your mercy.
