Read Psalms Chapter 40

For the leader of the music. A psalm of David.

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

I waited patiently for the LORD. He turned to me, and heard my cry.

He lifted me out of a terrible pit, out of the deep mud. He set my feet on a rock, and made my steps firm.

He has put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see it, and fear, and will trust in the LORD.

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, and does not turn to the proud, or to those who turn aside to lies.

O LORD my God, many are the wonderful works you have done, and the thoughts you have toward us. No one can set them out before you in order. If I tried to tell them and speak of them, they are more than can be counted.

Sacrifice and offering you did not want. You have opened my ears. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not asked for.

Then I said, "Look, I come. In the scroll of the book it is written of me."

"I delight to do your will, O my God. Yes, your law is within my heart."

I have preached righteousness in the great assembly. Look, I have not held back my lips, O LORD, and you know it.

I have not hidden your righteousness inside my heart. I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not kept your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.

Do not hold back your tender mercies from me, O LORD. Let your loving kindness and your truth always keep me safe.

For troubles beyond counting have closed in around me. My sins have caught hold of me, so that I cannot look up. They are more than the hairs of my head, so my heart fails me.

Be pleased, O LORD, to rescue me. O LORD, hurry to help me.

Let those who seek my life to destroy it be ashamed and confused together. Let those who wish evil for me be driven back and put to shame.

Let them be left desolate, as the reward of their shame, who say to me, "Aha, aha."

Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let those who love your salvation say again and again, "The LORD be praised."

But I am poor and needy. Yet the Lord thinks about me. You are my help and the one who sets me free. Do not delay, O my God.
