Read Psalms Chapter 38

A psalm of David, to help people remember.

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger. Do not punish me in your burning displeasure.

For your arrows have sunk deep into me, and your hand presses hard on me.

There is no health in my body because of your anger. There is no rest in my bones because of my sin.

For my sins have gone over my head. Like a heavy load, they are too heavy for me.

My wounds stink and are rotten because of my foolishness.

I am troubled; I am bowed down very low. I go about mourning all day long.

For my body is filled with a sickening disease, and there is no health in my flesh.

I am weak and badly broken. I have cried out loud because my heart is in turmoil.

Lord, all that I long for is before you, and my groaning is not hidden from you.

My heart pounds, my strength fails me. Even the light of my eyes has gone from me.

Those who love me and my friends keep away from my wounds, and my relatives stand far off.

Those who want to take my life set traps for me. Those who want to harm me speak of ruin, and plot lies all day long.

But I was like a deaf man, and did not hear. I was like a man who cannot speak, who does not open his mouth.

So I was like a man who does not hear, and who has no answer in his mouth.

For in you, O LORD, I hope. You will answer, O Lord my God.

For I said, "Hear me, or else they will gloat over me. When my foot slips, they boast against me."

For I am ready to fall, and my sorrow is always before me.

For I will confess my sin. I will be sorry for my sin.

But my enemies are lively, and they are strong. Those who hate me without cause are many.

Those who pay back evil for good are against me, because I follow what is good.

Do not leave me, O LORD. O my God, do not be far from me.

Hurry to help me, O Lord my salvation.
