Read Psalms Chapter 22

For the leader of the music, to the tune called Aijeleth Shahar. A psalm of David.

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, so far from the words of my groaning?

O my God, I cry out in the daytime, but you do not answer. I cry in the night, and I am not silent.

But you are holy, you who are enthroned on the praises of Israel.

Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you rescued them.

They cried to you and were rescued. They trusted in you and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm, and not a man. Men insult me, and the people despise me.

All who see me laugh at me and mock me. They curl their lips and shake their heads, saying,

"He trusted in the LORD to rescue him. Let the LORD rescue him, since he delighted in him."

But you are the one who brought me out of the womb. You made me trust you while I was at my mother's breasts.

I was laid upon you from birth. You have been my God from my mother's body.

Do not be far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to help.

Many bulls surround me. Strong bulls of Bashan close in on me.

They open their mouths wide at me, like a lion tearing its prey and roaring.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it has melted inside me.

My strength is dried up like a broken piece of pottery. My tongue sticks to my jaws. You have brought me down to the dust of death.

Dogs surround me. A gang of evil men has closed in on me. They pierced my hands and my feet.

I can count all my bones. They look at me and stare.

They divide my clothes among them, and they cast lots for my clothing.

But you, LORD, do not be far from me. O my strength, hurry to help me.

Save my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog.

Save me from the lion's mouth. You have heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

I will tell my brothers and sisters about your name. In the middle of the assembly I will praise you.

You who fear the LORD, praise him. All you children of Jacob, give him glory. Fear him, all you children of Israel.

For he has not despised or hated the suffering of the one who suffers. He has not hidden his face from him. When he cried to him, he heard.

My praise in the great assembly comes from you. I will pay what I have vowed in front of those who fear him.

The meek will eat and be satisfied. Those who seek the LORD will praise him. May your heart live for ever.

All the ends of the world will remember and turn to the LORD. All the families of the nations will worship before you.

For the kingdom belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will eat and worship. All who go down to the dust will bow before him, even the one who cannot keep his own soul alive.

Their children will serve him. They will be counted to the Lord as a generation.

They will come and tell his righteousness to a people not yet born, saying that he has done this.
