Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.

2Look, a man with leprosy came and worshipped him. He said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."

3Jesus reached out his hand and touched him. He said, "I am willing. Be clean." At once his leprosy was cleansed.

4Then Jesus said to him, "See that you tell no one. But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a witness to them."

5When Jesus had entered Capernaum, an army officer came to him and begged him,

6saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home, paralysed and in terrible pain."

7Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

8The officer answered, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed."

9"For I am a man under authority, and I have soldiers under me. I say to this man, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10When Jesus heard it, he was amazed. He said to those who followed him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found such great faith anywhere, not even in Israel."

11And I tell you, many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

12"But the children of the kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness outside. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth."

13Then Jesus said to the officer, "Go. As you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed at that very hour.

14When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's wife's mother lying in bed, sick with a fever.

15He touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and served them.

16When evening came, they brought to him many people who had demons in them. He drove out the spirits with his word, and he healed all who were sick.

17This was so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled: "He himself took our weaknesses and carried our sicknesses."

18When Jesus saw the large crowds around him, he gave the order to cross over to the other side.

19A scribe came and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."

20Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head."

21Another of his disciples said to him, "Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father."

22But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead."

23When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him.

24Look, a great storm rose up on the sea, so that the boat was covered by the waves. But he was asleep.

25His disciples came to him and woke him. They said, "Lord, save us. We are dying."

26He said to them, "Why are you afraid, you of little faith?" Then he got up and spoke sharply to the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27The men were amazed. They said, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him."

28When he came to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, two men with demons in them met him. They came out of the tombs, and they were so fierce that no one could pass that way.

29Look, they cried out, "What have we to do with you, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?"

30A long way off from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.

31So the demons begged him, "If you drive us out, allow us to go away into the herd of pigs."

32He said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the herd of pigs. Look, the whole herd of pigs rushed down a steep slope into the sea, and died in the water.

33The men who kept the pigs ran away. They went into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the men who had the demons.

34Look, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.

Explanation

Matthew 8

In short

Jesus comes down from a mountain and performs a series of miracles that show his power over sickness and nature. These acts amaze the crowds and teach what it means to follow him, but they also reveal that faith and obedience matter more than the outward signs of his power.

Context

Matthew has just recorded Jesus teaching on the mountain. Now Jesus descends with crowds following him. The chapter shows Jesus moving through the region around Capernaum, performing healings and miracles, and encountering people who want to become his followers. Throughout, Matthew connects these events to Old Testament promises about the Messiah.

What the text says

A leper approaches Jesus and asks to be cleansed. Jesus touches him and heals him immediately, then tells him to report to a priest and offer the sacrifice Moses commanded, as testimony.

A Roman officer called a centurion asks Jesus to heal his paralyzed servant. Jesus offers to come to his house, but the centurion says he is unworthy and that Jesus need only speak the word. Jesus praises this faith as greater than any found in Israel, and says many will come from east and west to sit with the patriarchs in heaven, while "the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness." The servant is healed.

Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law from fever. That evening, he casts out demons and heals the sick, which Matthew connects to Isaiah's prophecy that the Messiah would bear our infirmities.

Two would-be followers approach Jesus. One offers to follow him anywhere; Jesus replies that he has nowhere to lay his head. Another asks permission to bury his father first; Jesus tells him to let the dead bury their dead and follow him instead.

Jesus and his disciples cross the sea. A violent storm arises; Jesus is asleep. They wake him in fear, and he rebukes the wind and sea. A great calm follows, and the disciples marvel at his power.

On the other side, Jesus meets two demon-possessed men. The demons ask if he has come to torment them before their time. Jesus permits the demons to enter a nearby herd of swine, which then rushes into the sea and drowns. The townspeople ask Jesus to leave.

Takeaways

  • Jesus' power over illness, nature, and evil is demonstrated through action, not explanation.
  • Faith that does not require seeing a miracle, but trusts Jesus' word alone, draws his highest praise.
  • Following Jesus demands radical commitment that may conflict with cultural or family duty.
