At that time Herod the tetrarch heard how famous Jesus had become,

and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead. That is why these mighty works are done by him."

For Herod had arrested John, tied him up, and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.

For John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."

Herod wanted to put him to death, but he was afraid of the crowd, because they thought of John as a prophet.

But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced in front of them all, and she pleased Herod.

So he promised her with an oath that he would give her whatever she asked for.

Her mother had already told her what to say, so she said, "Give me here the head of John the Baptist on a dish."

The king was sorry. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat eating with him, he ordered that it be given to her.

He sent orders, and John was beheaded in the prison.

His head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother.

Then John's disciples came and took the body away and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

When Jesus heard it, he left that place by boat and went to a lonely place by himself. But when the people heard of it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

Jesus came out and saw a great crowd, and he was filled with compassion for them, and he healed their sick.

When it was evening, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now gone. Send the crowd away, so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."

But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."

They said to him, "We have only five loaves here, and two fish."

He said, "Bring them here to me."

He told the crowd to sit down on the grass. Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them and broke them. He gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowd.

They all ate and were filled. And they picked up twelve baskets full of the pieces that were left over.

Those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

At once Jesus made his disciples get into a boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the crowds away.

When he had sent the crowds away, he went up a mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, thrown about by the waves, for the wind was against them.

In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.

When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled. They said, "It is a spirit," and they cried out in fear.

But at once Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart. It is I. Do not be afraid."

Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water."

He said, "Come." And Peter climbed down out of the boat and walked on the water to go to Jesus.

But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid. He began to sink, and he cried out, "Lord, save me."

At once Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. He said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

And when they had come into the boat, the wind stopped.

Then those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.

When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word into all the country around, and they brought to him all who were ill.

They begged him to let them only touch the edge of his robe. And all who touched it were made completely well.
