Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Then Job answered and said,

2"No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you."

3But I have understanding as well as you. I am not less than you. Who does not know such things as these?

4I am someone mocked by his neighbour, a man who calls on God, and God answers him. The just and upright man is laughed at.

5The man whose feet are ready to slip is like a lamp that is despised in the thoughts of the man who is at ease.

6The tents of robbers do well, and those who provoke God are safe. God brings plenty into their hand.

7But ask the animals now, and they will teach you. Ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you.

8Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you. The fish of the sea will tell you.

9Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?

10In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

11Does not the ear test words, as the mouth tastes its food?

12With the old is wisdom, and with length of days is understanding.

13With him is wisdom and strength. He has counsel and understanding.

14Look, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again. He shuts a man in, and there can be no opening.

15Look, he holds back the waters, and they dry up. He sends them out, and they turn the earth over.

16With him is strength and wisdom. The one who is deceived and the one who deceives are his.

17He leads counsellors away stripped, and he makes the judges fools.

18He loosens the bond of kings, and ties a belt around their waists.

19He leads princes away stripped, and overthrows the mighty.

20He takes away the speech of those who are trusted, and takes away the understanding of the old.

21He pours contempt on princes, and weakens the strength of the mighty.

22He uncovers deep things out of the darkness, and brings the shadow of death out into the light.

23He makes nations great, and destroys them. He spreads the nations out, and hems them in again.

24He takes away the heart of the leaders of the people of the earth, and makes them wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25"They feel their way in the dark without light, and he makes them stagger like a drunken man."

Explanation

Job 12

In short

Job turns on his friends with sharp sarcasm, telling them they do not hold a monopoly on wisdom. He argues that God's power and control over all creation is obvious to anyone who looks at nature, animals, and human affairs, and that this same God reduces the great and wise to nothing.

Context

Job has been listening to his three friends offer explanations for his suffering. Now he responds directly. His tone is bitter: he is mocked by those around him for calling on God, yet God seems distant. His friends, by contrast, speak with certainty. Job's response uses mockery and sarcasm to challenge their confidence in their own understanding.

What the text says

Job opens by mocking his friends in verses 1-3: they speak as though wisdom belongs to them alone and will die with them, but Job claims he understands the same things they do. In verses 4-6, he describes his own situation: he is laughed at for his piety, while the wicked prosper and those who provoke God live securely.

From verses 7-9, Job makes his central point: look at nature. Ask the animals, the birds, the earth, the sea. They all teach that God's hand has made these things. Verses 10-13 expand this: God holds the soul and breath of every living thing; with Him is wisdom and strength.

Verses 14-25 catalog God's absolute power over human affairs. He breaks down what cannot be rebuilt, controls water, leads counselors away stripped of wisdom, makes judges fools, loosens the bonds of kings, overthrows the mighty, removes speech and understanding from the old, pours contempt on princes, and destroys nations. In verses 24-25, He takes away the heart of the earth's leaders, causing them to wander lost in darkness like drunken men.

Takeaways

  • Job claims common knowledge about God's power, not hidden wisdom, is what proves God rules all things.
  • God's authority extends over nature, wisdom, human leaders, and nations with no exception.
  • The truly wise see these things; Job's friends do not have exclusive claim to understanding.
