Read Genesis Chapter 7

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1The LORD said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household. For I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation."

2"Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, the male and his female. And take two of the animals that are not clean, the male and his female."

3"Take also seven of every kind of bird of the air, the male and the female, to keep their kind alive on the face of all the earth."

4"For in seven days more I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. And I will wipe out from the face of the earth every living thing that I have made."

5And Noah did everything that the LORD commanded him.

6Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came on the earth.

7Noah went into the ark, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, because of the waters of the flood.

8Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth,

9two by two they went in to Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

10After seven days the waters of the flood came on the earth.

11In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the windows of heaven were opened.

12And the rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

13On that very day Noah went into the ark, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them.

14They went in, and every wild animal after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort.

15They went in to Noah into the ark, two by two of all flesh that has the breath of life in it.

16Those that went in were male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in.

17The flood was on the earth forty days. The waters rose and lifted up the ark, and it was raised high above the earth.

18The waters grew strong and rose greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters.

19The waters grew stronger and stronger on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered.

20The waters rose fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.

21And all flesh that moved on the earth died: birds, and cattle, and wild animals, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man.

22Everything on the dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.

23Every living thing on the face of the ground was wiped out: man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the birds of the heaven. They were wiped off the earth. Only Noah was left alive, and those who were with him in the ark.

24And the waters stayed strong on the earth a hundred and fifty days.

Explanation

Genesis 7

In short

God commands Noah to enter the ark with his family and pairs of animals, then seals them inside before releasing the flood. Waters rise to cover all the earth and mountains, killing every living thing outside the ark, while Noah and those with him survive inside.

Context

This chapter follows God's instructions to Noah to build the ark. Noah is now told to board it. He is addressed as righteous, and the flood is about to begin. The narrative describes both the entry into the ark and the flood itself that follows.

What the text says

God tells Noah to enter the ark with his whole household because God has seen him righteous (verses 1). Noah must take clean animals by sevens and unclean by twos, male and female, along with birds by sevens, to preserve life on earth (verses 2-3). Rain will fall for forty days and nights starting in seven days, destroying all living things (verse 4). Noah obeys (verse 5).

When Noah is six hundred years old, he enters the ark with his sons and their wives (verses 6-7). The animals enter two by two, male and female, as God commanded (verses 8-9). After seven days the waters come (verse 10). On the specific day in Noah's six hundredth year, the fountains of the great deep break open and heaven's windows open (verse 11). Rain falls forty days and forty nights (verse 12).

Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives enter with every kind of animal (verses 13-15). They enter as God commanded, and the Lord shuts Noah in (verse 16). Water rises and lifts the ark above the earth (verses 17-18). Waters increase greatly, covering all high hills and mountains by fifteen cubits (verses 19-20). All flesh that breathes dies, on land and in air (verses 21-22). Every living thing is destroyed except Noah and those with him in the ark (verse 23). Waters prevail for one hundred and fifty days (verse 24).

Takeaways

  • God preserves a righteous man and his household through judgment that destroys all other life.
  • The flood comes from two sources at once: rain from heaven and waters breaking up from deep below.
  • Noah's obedience and God's sealing of the ark are the means of survival.
