Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmeelites who had brought him down there.
The LORD was with Joseph, and he did well in everything. He lived in the house of his master the Egyptian.
His master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made everything he did go well in his hands.
So Joseph found grace in his eyes, and he served him. His master put him in charge of his house, and gave everything he had into his hands.
From the time he put Joseph in charge of his house and of all that he had, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.
He left everything he had in Joseph's hands. He did not concern himself with anything, except the food he ate. Joseph was handsome and good to look at.
After this, his master's wife looked at Joseph with desire. She said, "Lie with me."
But he refused. He said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put everything he has into my hands."
"There is no one greater in this house than I am. He has kept nothing back from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
She spoke to Joseph day after day, but he would not listen to her. He would not lie beside her, or be with her.
About this time Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house were inside.
She caught hold of his coat and said, "Lie with me." But he left his coat in her hand, and ran, and got outside.
When she saw that he had left his coat in her hand and had run outside,
she called to the men of her house and said to them, "See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make fun of us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice."
"When he heard me lift up my voice and cry out, he left his coat with me, and ran, and got outside."
She kept his coat beside her until his master came home.
Then she told him the same thing. She said, "The Hebrew servant you brought to us came in to me to make fun of me."
"But when I lifted up my voice and cried out, he left his coat with me and ran outside."
When his master heard the words his wife spoke to him, saying, "This is what your servant did to me," he became very angry.
Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were kept. So he was there in the prison.
But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favour in the eyes of the keeper of the prison.
The keeper of the prison put into Joseph's hands all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it.
The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's hand, because the LORD was with him. Whatever he did, the LORD made it go well.
