Read Genesis Chapter 19

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Two angels came to Sodom in the evening. Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, and bowed with his face toward the ground.

He said, "Please, my lords, come to your servant's house. Stay the night, and wash your feet. Then you can get up early and go on your way." They said, "No; we will stay in the street all night."

But he urged them strongly, so they turned aside and went into his house. He made them a feast, and baked bread without yeast, and they ate.

But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house. Both old and young, all the people from every part of the city were there.

They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them."

Lot went out of the door to them, and shut the door behind him.

He said, "Please, my brothers, do not do such a wicked thing."

"Look now, I have two daughters who have not known a man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them whatever seems good to you. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shadow of my roof."

They said, "Stand back." And they said, "This one man came here to live as a stranger, and now he wants to be a judge. Now we will treat you worse than them." They pushed hard against the man, against Lot, and came near to breaking down the door.

But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.

They struck the men at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out trying to find the door.

The men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here? Your sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whatever you have in the city, bring them out of this place."

"For we are going to destroy this place. The cry against these people has grown great before the face of the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it."

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters. He said, "Get up, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy this city." But to his sons-in-law he seemed like a man who was joking.

When morning came, the angels urged Lot to hurry. They said, "Get up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city."

But he delayed. So the men took hold of his hand, and his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters, for the LORD was merciful to him. They brought him out and set him outside the city.

When they had brought them outside, he said, "Run for your life. Do not look behind you, and do not stop anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountain, or you will be swept away."

Lot said to them, "Oh, not so, my Lord."

"Look now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have shown me great mercy in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the mountain. Something terrible may overtake me, and I will die."

"Look now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a small one. Oh, let me escape there. Is it not a small one? Then my life will be saved."

He said to him, "See, I have granted you this request also. I will not overthrow the city you have spoken about."

"Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there." That is why the city was called Zoar.

The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

Then the LORD rained down burning sulphur and fire on Sodom and on Gomorrah, from the LORD out of heaven.

He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the people living in the cities, and everything that grew on the ground.

But Lot's wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Abraham got up early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD.

He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain. He saw the smoke of the country going up like the smoke of a furnace.

So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham. He sent Lot out of the middle of the destruction, when he overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

Lot went up out of Zoar and lived in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived in a cave, he and his two daughters.

The older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us in the way of all the earth."

"Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, so that we may keep our father's family line alive."

So they made their father drink wine that night. The older daughter went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down, nor when she got up.

The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Look, last night I lay with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also. Then you go in and lie with him, so that we may keep our father's family line alive."

So they made their father drink wine that night also. The younger daughter got up and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down, nor when she got up.

So both the daughters of Lot were pregnant by their father.

The older daughter gave birth to a son, and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.

The younger daughter also gave birth to a son, and named him Benammi. He is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.
