Read Genesis Chapter 1

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2The earth had no shape, and it was empty. Darkness lay over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters.

3And God said, "Let there be light." And there was light.

4God saw that the light was good. And God divided the light from the darkness.

5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters."

7So God made the firmament. He divided the waters under the firmament from the waters above the firmament. And it was so.

8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9And God said, "Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.

10God called the dry land Earth, and the waters gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11And God said, "Let the earth bring out grass, and plants that make seed, and fruit trees that bear fruit of their own kind, with their seed inside them, upon the earth." And it was so.

12The earth brought out grass, and plants that make seed of their own kind, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside them, of their own kind. And God saw that it was good.

13And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night. Let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years."

15"Let them be lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth." And it was so.

16God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.

17God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20And God said, "Let the waters bring out great numbers of moving creatures that have life, and birds that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven."

21So God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought out in great numbers, each of its own kind, and every winged bird of its own kind. And God saw that it was good.

22And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, and increase, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds increase on the earth."

23And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24And God said, "Let the earth bring out living creatures of every kind: cattle, and creeping things, and wild animals of the earth, each of its own kind." And it was so.

25God made the wild animals of the earth of their own kind, and the cattle of their own kind, and everything that creeps upon the earth of its own kind. And God saw that it was good.

26And God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."

27So God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them.

28And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, and increase, and fill the earth, and take charge of it. Rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."

29And God said, "Look, I have given you every plant bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They shall be your food."

30"And to every wild animal of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to every thing that creeps upon the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.

31And God saw everything that he had made, and look, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Explanation

Genesis 1

In short

God creates the entire cosmos in six days by speaking things into existence: light, sky, land and plants, sun and moon and stars, sea creatures and birds, and finally land animals and human beings. Each day's work is called good, and humans alone are made in God's image and given authority over creation. On the seventh day, God rests.

Context

This is the opening chapter of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. It presents the account of creation from its beginning, with no narrative prior to verse 1. God is the speaker throughout, acting alone to bring order and life into being. The account establishes foundational themes for all that follows in Scripture.

What the text says

Verse 1 states that God created heaven and earth at the start. Verses 2 to 5 describe the first day: the earth begins without form and covered in darkness, God's Spirit moves on the waters, God speaks light into existence, sees it is good, and separates light from darkness, naming them Day and Night.

Days two and three (verses 6 to 13) see God create a "firmament" or sky dividing waters above from below, then gather the lower waters to reveal dry land, and command the earth to produce vegetation. Each step is declared good.

Days four and five (verses 14 to 23) add the sun and moon and stars to mark time, and sea creatures and birds, which God blesses with a command to multiply.

Day six (verses 24 to 31) brings forth land animals, then humanity. Verses 26 to 27 state that God made humans "in our image" and "in the image of God," male and female together. Verse 28 gives them authority over all creatures and commands them to multiply and fill the earth. God provides plants as food. Verse 31 declares everything "very good."

The chapter ends with verse implying a seventh day of rest, though the rest itself is not described until Genesis 2.

Takeaways

  • God brings all creation into being through speech, and each part of creation has built-in purpose and value.
  • Humans are made in God's image, distinct from all other creatures, and given rule over the rest of creation.
  • The narrative emphasizes order, goodness, and blessing as God's design from the beginning.
