1 John 5 - Simple English

OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read 1 John Chapter 5

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. And everyone who loves the Father also loves the child born of him.

2This is how we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep his commandments.

3For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not a heavy burden.

4For everyone who is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world: our faith.

5Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

6This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.

7For there are three that bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. And these three are one.

8And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, and the water, and the blood. And these three agree in one.

9If we accept the witness of men, the witness of God is greater. For this is the witness of God, which he has given about his Son.

10Whoever believes in the Son of God has this witness in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he does not believe the record that God gave about his Son.

11And this is the record: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

13I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life, and so that you may believe in the name of the Son of God.

14And this is the confidence we have in him: if we ask anything that agrees with his will, he hears us.

15And if we know that he hears us, whatever we ask, then we know that we have what we asked of him.

16If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life, for those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.

17All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin that does not lead to death.

18We know that whoever is born of God does not sin. The one born of God keeps himself, and that wicked one does not touch him.

19And we know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in wickedness.

20And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

21Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Explanation

1 John 5

In short

John closes his letter by showing what it means to believe in Jesus and follow God. He connects faith, obedience, and love together, and he reassures believers that those born of God have eternal life and can pray with confidence.

Context

This is the end of 1 John. Throughout the letter, John has been writing to a community facing confusion about who Jesus is and how to live. Now he brings together the main threads: true faith in Jesus produces obedience and love, and these mark a believer as truly belonging to God.

What the text says

Verse 1 states that believing Jesus is the Christ means being born of God, and loving God naturally means loving his children. Verses 2-3 show how we know we love God's children: by loving God and keeping his commandments, which are not a burden. Verses 4-5 say that being born of God means overcoming the world through faith in Jesus as the Son of God.

Verses 6-8 speak of three witnesses: Jesus came through water and blood, and the Spirit witnesses to this. Three things testify in heaven (Father, Word, Holy Ghost) and three on earth (Spirit, water, blood) all agree.

Verses 9-10 compare human witness to God's witness. God's is greater. Believing in the Son means having this witness inside yourself; not believing makes God a liar.

Verses 11-13 state plainly: God gave us eternal life in his Son. Having the Son means having life. John wrote these things so believers would know they have eternal life.

Verses 14-15 offer confidence in prayer: God hears requests made according to his will, and believers will receive what they ask. Verses 16-17 mention praying for a brother's sin, noting some sin leads to death. Verse 18 says the born of God do not sin habitually; they are kept safe. Verses 19-20 affirm believers are of God while the world lies in wickedness, and God gave understanding to know him truly. Verse 21 closes with a simple command: keep away from idols.

Takeaways

  • Believing in Jesus as the Son of God and obeying God go together; they produce love for others and protection from the world.
  • God's own testimony about his Son is trustworthy, and believers carry this witness inside them.
  • Eternal life, according to John, is not something distant but something given now to those who have the Son.
