Corinthians 12 - Simple English

OriginalSimple EnglishSimpleNew Summary

Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 12

Up and down arrows move from one verse to the next.

Now about spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be ignorant.

You know that when you were Gentiles, you were carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.

So I want you to understand this: no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed." And no one can say that Jesus is the Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.

There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

There are different kinds of work, but it is the same God who works all of them in everyone.

The Spirit is shown in each person for the good of all.

To one person the Spirit gives the word of wisdom. To another the same Spirit gives the word of knowledge.

To another he gives faith by the same Spirit. To another he gives the gifts of healing by the same Spirit.

To another, the working of miracles. To another, prophecy. To another, the telling apart of spirits. To another, different kinds of tongues. To another, the interpretation of tongues.

But all these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who gives to each person separately, as he wills.

The body is one, and it has many parts. All the parts of that one body, though there are many of them, are one body. So it is with Christ.

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether we are Jews or Gentiles, whether we are slaves or free. And we have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

For the body is not one part, but many.

If the foot says, "Because I am not the hand, I am not part of the body," is it therefore not part of the body?

And if the ear says, "Because I am not the eye, I am not part of the body," is it therefore not part of the body?

If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?

But God has set the parts, every one of them, in the body, as it pleased him.

And if they were all one part, where would the body be?

But now there are many parts, yet only one body.

The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you." Nor again can the head say to the feet, "I do not need you."

No, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are much more necessary.

And the parts of the body that we think are less honourable, we give more honour to. Our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,

while our presentable parts have no need of it. But God has joined the body together, giving greater honour to the part that lacked it,

so that there should be no division in the body, but that the parts should have the same care for one another.

If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it. If one part is honoured, all the parts rejoice with it.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a part of it.

And God has set some in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helpers, leaders, different kinds of tongues.

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?

Do all have the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

But desire earnestly the best gifts. And yet I show you a still better way.
