Mount CarmelMount Carmel is a mountain range where Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal to a dramatic contest. When God sent fire from heaven to consume Elijah's sacrifice, the people acknowledged the Lord as God. Elijah then prayed for rain, ending a three-year drought.
Mount GerizimMount Gerizim is a sacred mountain near Shechem where the blessings of the covenant were proclaimed, while curses were declared from nearby Mount Ebal. The Samaritans built their temple here and consider it, not Jerusalem, the proper place of worship. Jesus referenced this in his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well.
Mount GilboaMount Gilboa is a mountain range in northern Israel overlooking the Jezreel Valley where King Saul and his sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua fell in battle against the Philistines. This tragic defeat marked the end of Saul's reign and led to David's heartfelt lament, in which he cursed the mountains to have no dew or rain. The Philistines displayed Saul's body on the walls of nearby Beth-shan.
Mount HermonMount Hermon is a majestic mountain range marking Israel's northern border, standing as the highest peak in the region at over 9,000 feet. In biblical times, it served as a significant landmark and was associated with the transfiguration of Jesus, though some traditions place this event here rather than Mount Tabor. The mountain was also known for its abundant dew and snow, which provided vital water sources for the Jordan River system.
Mount HorMount Hor was the mountain where Aaron, the first high priest of Israel and brother of Moses, died and was buried during the Israelites' wilderness wanderings. Located on the border of Edom, it marked a significant moment of transition in Israel's leadership as the priesthood passed from Aaron to his son Eleazar.
Mount HorebMount Horeb, also called the Mountain of God, is another name for Mount Sinai. Moses saw the burning bush here before the Exodus. Elijah fled here after confronting the prophets of Baal and experienced God in a gentle whisper. It represents a place of divine encounter.
Mount MoriahMount Moriah is where Abraham was called to sacrifice Isaac, demonstrating his faith in God who provided a ram as a substitute. Later, Solomon built the Temple on this same mountain, making it one of the most sacred sites in Judaism. The Dome of the Rock now stands on this location.
Mount NeboMount Nebo is a mountain in Moab from which Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death. God showed him all the land He had promised to Abraham's descendants. Moses died here and was buried by God in an unknown location. He was 120 years old.
Mount of BeatitudesThe hillside above the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee where tradition places the Sermon on the Mount. Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the mountain, sat down, and began with the poor in spirit. The slope forms a natural amphitheatre over the lake.
Mount of OlivesThe Mount of Olives is a mountain ridge east of Jerusalem with profound significance in Jesus' life. He often went there to pray, delivered the Olivet Discourse about end times, and spent his last night in the Garden of Gethsemane at its base. Jesus ascended to heaven from this mountain, and Zechariah prophesied that the Messiah would return there.
Mount SinaiMount Sinai, also called Mount Horeb, is where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and established the covenant with Israel. The mountain was covered with fire, smoke, and thunder when God descended upon it. Moses spent 40 days on the mountain receiving the Law. Centuries later, the prophet Elijah fled to this same mountain and encountered God in a still, small voice.
Mount TaborMount Tabor is a prominent mountain in the Jezreel Valley where Deborah and Barak gathered troops to defeat Sisera's army during the period of the Judges. This strategic location served as a gathering point for the tribes of Israel and is traditionally associated with the Transfiguration of Jesus, though the Gospels do not specify the exact mountain.
