Paul explains he sends the brethren ahead to ensure the Corinthians' promised bounty is ready as a blessing rather than extortion, lest his boasting about their readiness be shamed by accompanying Macedonians finding them unprepared. He expounds principles of sowing and reaping: God loves a cheerful giver, is able to make all grace abound, will multiply their seed and increase fruits of righteousness, and through this ministry supplies the saints while producing thanksgiving to God.

Before writing 2 Corinthians, Paul wrote a severe letter to the Corinthians 'out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears' after a painful visit. This 'letter of tears' is mentioned in 2 Corinthians but may now be lost to history.
